Colorado Picked Eighth In Preseason Poll

BOULDER – Colorado Volleyball junior setter Jenna Ewert was named to the 2021 Preseason All-Pac-12 team, the conference announced this morning along with the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll that tabbed the Buffs in eighth.

Ewert is the first CU player to be named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 team since Naghede Abu and Alexa Smith in 2018. Ewert has led the Buffs in assists the last two season and had a team-high 14 double-doubles last season. She led CU to a 5-0 start and a win over then-ranked No.5 Illinois last year. Ewert finished the season named an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

Ewert was also named the Buffs Invitational MVP after leading Colorado to a school record hitting percentage in a four-set match against Oakland, also the second-highest mark in NCAA history. As a freshman she was a two-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week and named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team. She is also only the second setter in CU history to post a double-double with assists and blocks.

The Buffs finished the 2019 season with a 13-17 record while going 5-15 in conference play. They closed with a 5-5 mark in conference play in the final half with ranked wins over No.23 UCLA and No.24 Cal. The team finished in a three-way tie for eighth with Arizona and Oregon, leaving CU in the same place it finished for the preseason poll, right between an Arizona school and Oregon.

No.10 Utah took the top spot in the preseason poll with nine of the 12 first place votes and 119 total points. Washington, Stanford and UCLA were all separated by just one point with the Huskies earning 100 votes, Stanford 99 and UCLA 98. All of the teams in the top-four earned at least a first place vote.

Stanford entered the AVCA poll ranked third in the nation, while Washington is eighth and Utah is 10th. UCLA enters at 22nd while Washington State and USC are receiving votes.  Colorado will have to play without the two matches against the defending national champions as Stanford's local health regulations require 10 days of quarantine after leaving the country and do not allow indoor sport activities. The Cardinal, like all other Pac-12 teams, are seeking to play in at least 10 games to be eligible for the NCAA Championships.
