Woods Named Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week
October 18, 2021 | Football
SAN FRANCISCO--Freshman Trevor Woods was named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Colorado Buffaloes 34-0 win over Arizona Saturday, voted on by media from around the league.
Woods came up with a crucial block of an Arizona punt midway through the third quarter, a play that proved to be a turning point even though the Buffs were up 6-0 at that point. Woods returned the punt 54 yards for a touchdown to make the game 13-0.
On the next possession, Carson Wells returned an interception for a touchdown, and then on the subsequent offensive possession, Brendon Lewis found Brenden Rice for a 62-yard touchdown to turn that 6-0 lead into a 27-0 lead in just over five minutes of game time.
It was the Buffs first blocked punt since Alex Fontenot blocked two in back-to-back weeks in Nov. 2018 (last coming Nov. 24 at Cal) and first that was returned for a touchdown since Lawrence Vickers on Sept. 11, 2004 against Washington State.
A true freshman and native of Katy, Texas, Woods has been a solid special teams performer all season and has seen action on defense in five of six games as a backup safety. He also recorded two tackles on defense against the Wildcats.
Woods and the Buffs next hit the field Saturday at California in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff on Pac-12 Networks.
