Balzert Finishes Runner-Up In Fall Invite

MORAGA, Calif. – Colorado women's tennis junior Antonia Balzert picked up a key win here Sunday evening to advance to the finals of the St. Mary's College Fall Invite.

Balzert, who celebrated her birthday Sunday, defeated Erin Richardson of Cal to advance to the Flight A Singles Final Sunday afternoon. She took down the fellow conference member in straight sets with both scored 6-2.

The junior then faced Maria Martinez Vaquero of San Francisco in the finals where she lost 6-2, 6-1. Vaquero got the better of two Buffs as Megan Forster fell to her in the semifinals by a score of 6-4, 6-1.

Balzert finished the tournament with a 4-1 record to improve to a team-best 7-2 record in singles play. Colorado as a team finished the tournament with an even 6-6 record in doubles and 13-12 record in singles play.

The Buffs through three tournaments this season are one win shy of .500 in singles play at 26-27 and are 11-16 in doubles. The duo of Ellie Puzak and Betina Tokac lead the team with a 3-1 doubles record while Balzert and Tokac both have a winning singles record greater than .700.

Colorado has this weekend off in preparations for the ITA Mountain Regionals in Las Vegas October 13-17. They close out the fall season at the Florida Gulf Coast Invite November 5-7.
