National Champions Win CU Athletes Of The Week, Presented By Arrow
March 15, 2021 | General
BOULDER- National Champions Cassidy Gray (Skiing), Magnus Boee (Skiing) and Sage Hurta (Indoor Track) are the CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow.
Gray won the first National Championship of the week for the Buffs in the giant slalom at the NCAA Championships in Franconia, N.H. Gray started the event as the 26th skier out of 33, but quickly outshined her seed number. The freshman had the third-fastest first run in the field and the fastest second run ahead of every skier by over a second. Gray's title was the Buffs 98th individual skiing National Championship in program history.
Boee won not one, but two individual titles at the NCAA Championships last week. Boee won his first title of the week in the 10K classic race. The win was his ninth of the season, setting a new men's Nordic CU record and was his fifth classic win of the season which is also tops in CU history. The sophomore then capped his season by adding to his record with his tenth win on the year in the men's 20K freestyle race. Boee is the 24th CU skier to win multiple individual championships and just the 10th to sweep two races at the NCAA Championships. It was the 99th and 100th individual National Championships in CU skiing history.
Hurta ended the week with another individual championship for the Buffs in the women's mile at the NCAA Championships with a time of 4:30.58. Hurta made her move around the 500-meter mark where she distanced herself from the field and proved too dominant to catch. Hurta is just the second Buff to win the indoor mile for Colorado as she joins Emma Coburn from 2013. It is CU's 24th individual national championship in track and field and the 19th indoor title.
