USTFCCCA Names Herrera Men’s National XC Athlete Of The Week
March 06, 2021 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS —On the heels of winning his first individual men's title at the 2020 Pac-12 Cross Country Championship March 5, Colorado senior Eduardo Herrera has been named the USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week.
The Madera, Calif. native won the 8-kilometer race at Chambers Creek Park in University Place, Wash., in 22 minutes, 30.9 seconds, finishing a full 11 seconds in front of the runner-up, Stanford's Charles Hicks.
Herrera went to the front of the large pack at the beginning of the race. Around the 3k mark, he was leading the field with Hicks, but by the midway point, it was time to put some separation between the pack and him, so he made a move that helped him become Colorado's second straight individual Pac-12 Champion even though Hicks came with him.
Hicks managed to stay close for another 3k, but Herrera kept adding distance between the two so that by the time he had 500 meters left, Herrera had a significant advantage and was able to cruise to the finish.
The award was announced Saturday after the completion of the conference championships. While Herrera was named the men's national athlete of the week, Washington's Haley Herbert was awarded the women's honor.
The NCAA Championship Selection Show is Sunday, March 7, at 11 a.m. MT, and will be streamed on NCAA.com.
