Buffaloes Season Ends In Sweep To WSU

SAN DIEGO – Colorado women's tennis fell to Washington State by a score of 4-0 Friday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center for the first round of the Pac-12 Championships.
 
The Buffaloes (9-12, 3-7 Pac-12) finish the season tied for the most wins in conference history as Washington State (14-15, 4-6 Pac-12) move on to take on No.5-ranked UCLA tomorrow.
 
Washington State took early command following the doubles point victory in the No.1 and No.3 matches. Pang Jittakoat and Fifa Kumhom took early command against Antonia Balzert and Megan Forster in the No.3 match, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and sealing the first win 6-2. The other two matches were much closer in the middle with Fleur Eggink and Sophia Derivan trailing Melisa Ates and Hikaru Sato 4-3 in the No.1 doubles match while Ky Ecton and Maria Campos were up 4-3 on Michaela Bayerlova and Yang Lee. Ates and Sato took the No.1 doubles match 6-3.
 
Moving to singles play, Colorado was up early with 5-3 leads in the No.2 and No.3 matches with Campos against Sato and Forster against Kumhom. Balzert was also up on Savanna Ly-Nguyen 5-2. Forster took the first and only set win for CU today, 6-3, while Campos and Balzert both dropped the first set leads 7-5 and 7-6(5), respectfully.
 
The first match to conclude was Eggink falling to Ates by a pair of 6-3 sets in the No.6 match. Soon after Ecton fell to Jittakoat 6-3, 6-4 to set WSU up with match point. The final straw came when Sato defeated Campos 6-2 to take the No.2 singles match and the dual.
 
The final matches were abandoned with Forster tied up 5-5 in the second set against Kumhom, Derivan down 6-4, 5-3 to Michaela Bayerlova in the No.1 singles match and Balzert up 4-1 in the second set of the No.4 singles match.
