April 05, 2021 | General
BOULDER- After a historic weekend in Colorado track and field, Eduardo Herrera and Sage Hurta are the CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow.
Herrera kicked off the Hayward Premiere in Eugene, Ore. for the Buffs in style on Friday winning the 5,000 meter run in 13:24.46. Herrera beat a field of strong runners including defending cross country national champion Conner Mantz from BYU who set the BYU school record with his time on Friday.
The mark was good for second all-time in Colorado's record book and broke his previous personal record by 33-seconds. It was also an Olympic Trials qualifying mark, the third-fastest 5,000 collegiate runner since 2017 and the collegiate lead for this season.
Hurta made history for the Buffs again on Saturday evening at the GCU Antelope Invitational in Phoenix. Hurta won the women's 800 meters run with a time of 2:00.62. The time lowered the school record in the race which she held.
The blazing mark also puts her 10th all-time in NCAA history in the women's outdoor 800 and is the fastest outdoor time since the 2017 NCAA Championships. Hurta's performance also qualifies for the Olympic Trials.
