CU's Paterson Drops Quarterfinal Match in British Amateur

Buff junior had won three matches in two days

NAIRN, Scotland — University of Colorado junior John Paterson won both his matches here Thursday to advance into the quarterfinals of the British Amateur, his second time competing in the prestigious event.
Paterson, who hails from St. Andrews, Scotland was ranked 567th in the most recent world amateur golf rankings, tied for sixth in the stroke play portion of the event, turning in a 72-69—141 scorecard, good for 1-under par on the 6,828-yard, par-71 Nairn Golf Club course layout. He had an eagle, six birdies and 22 pars against seven bogeys and came out as the No. 8 seed overall.
He defeated fellow countryman Derek Paton in his first round match, 6 and 5, and then advanced into the round of 16 early Thursday with a 1-up verdict over England's Rory Browne on the 19th hole. Later in the day, he defeated England's Josef Hacker by a 3 and 2 tally to make it into the final eight, where he will square off against England's Monty Scowsill in a match that begins at 1:15 a.m. mountain time.
The winner will face the victor of the James Ashfield (Wales) vs. Calum Scott (Scotland) at 7:30 a.m. MDT Friday in the semifinals. Saturday's 36-hole championship match will commence at 1:30 a.m. MDT.
In the 2018 event, he tied for 40th in the stroke play qualifying (75-71), and won his first round match before falling in the second (2 and 1).
Paterson was fourth on the Buffs in stroke average this past spring (73.41), and owns a career norm of 73.25 for 26 events/81 rounds in his CU career.
FRIDAY UPDATE: CU junior John Paterson lost Friday in the British Amateur quarterfinals to Monty Scowsill, 3 & 2. Birdies were hard to come by, as Scowsill had two and Paterson one, but Scowsill's second clinched the win for him on the 16th hole. There was a one-hole difference in the match for 11 of the holes, going to an advantage of two for Scowsill after Paterson bogeyed 13. Scowsill did win his semifinal match to advance to Saturday's 36-hole final.
