Young Named To CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 At-Large Team
July 09, 2021 | Skiing, Herbst Academic Center
BOULDER - Senior Joey Young was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 At-Large team Thursday, becoming the first CU skier honored by the organization since 2015. Â
Young holds a cumulative 3.85 grade point average from the Leeds School of Business, majoring in both Accounting and Finance. Â He has been named to the National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team three times, was named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll and earned the Male Senior Scholar Athlete Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at Colorado. Â He was also given the department's prestigious Ceal Barry Leadership Award in 2021.Â
On the slopes, he has raced in 49 of a possible 51 races in his career, finishing 41 of those races with 33 top 20, 19 top 10 and seven top five performances, including three podiums and two race victories. Â He has been an All-RMISA selection twice in his four seasons and has earned three prestigious team awards, the Laura Sharpe Flood award in 2018, the Buddy Werner Award in 2019 and the Spencer Nelson award in 2021. Â
Young was the only skier selected to an All-District team at any level in 2020-21. Â To put into perspective how hard it is to make the CoSIDA All-District team, more than 400 skiers nationally boast above a 3.5 cumulative GPA and were named to the National All-Academic Ski Team by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association. Â The at-large team combines 26 NCAA sponsored sports and District 7 consists of all institutions in eight states, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas. Â Literally thousands of student-athletes are academically eligible for the at-large program every season. Â
Young now advances to the national ballot, which will be voted upon later this month. Â The ski team has had five skiers earn six Academic All-America honors, and Young will look to join Kelly McCann (1996), Ondrej Valentina (1998), Linda Wikstrom (2000), Andreas Haug (2013, '14), and Rune Oedegaard (2015). Â
Young is the 10th known ski team member to earn Academic All-District honors, along with the above five, he joins Brooke Wales Granstrom (2015), Matt Gelso (2008), Mariel Hubbard (2005) and Claire Critchley (2004) on All-District teams. Â Full district teams prior to 2000 aren't known, but all All-Americans were also All-District selections.Â
Young has decided to ski for the Buffs for one more season in 2022 as the NCAA granted all student-athletes an additional season of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Â
