Joey Young Named Academic All-American

August 06, 2021 | Skiing

BOULDER - Senior Joey Young was named to the third-team of the CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large team Friday, continuing to rack up academic honors headed into his second senior season.  Young is the sixth member of the ski team to earn Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA and the 67th in school history.

Young holds a cumulative 3.85 grade point average from the Leeds School of Business, majoring in both Accounting and Finance.  He has been named to the National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team three times, was named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll and earned the Male Senior Scholar Athlete Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at Colorado.  He was also given the department's prestigious Ceal Barry Leadership Award in 2021.

On the slopes, he has raced in 49 of a possible 51 races in his career, finishing 41 of those races with 33 top 20, 19 top 10 and seven top five performances, including three podiums and two race victories.   He has been an All-RMISA selection twice in his four seasons and has earned three prestigious team awards, the Laura Sharpe Flood award in 2018, the Buddy Werner Award in 2019 and the Spencer Nelson award in 2021.

Young is the only skier nationally to earn All-America distinction this season, as he was also the only skier on the All-District ballots last month.  To put into perspective how hard it is to make the CoSIDA All-America team, more than 400 skiers nationally boast above a 3.5 cumulative GPA and were named to the National All-Academic Ski Team by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association.  The At-Large team combines 26 NCAA sponsored sports and District 7 consists of all institutions in eight states, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.  Literally thousands of student-athletes are academically eligible for the at-large program every season.

Young joins Kelly McCann (1996), Ondrej Valentina (1998), Linda Wikstrom (2000), Andreas Haug (2013, '14), and Rune Oedegaard (2015) as Academic All-Americans for the Buffs ski team.

Young has decided to ski for the Buffs for one more season in 2022 as the NCAA granted all student-athletes an additional season of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
