Colorado Singles Pick Up Consolation Matches

SAN DIEGO/FORT COLLINS — The University of Colorado women's tennis team picked up a pair of consolation victories between the CSU Jon Messick Invitational and San Diego Intercollegiate Championships Saturday.

On the west coast, Elys Ventura took down Pac-12 conference foe Belen Nevenhoven of Arizona in straight sets. She took the first set with a perfect 6-0, then finished the match 6-2. Ventura teamed up with Mila Stanojevic as the duo took down another Arizona tandem in doubles exhibition 6-3.

Rain halted any action of doubles in the main tournament in Fort Collins, but the Buffaloes continued on in the consolation rounds with freshman Anya Nelson picking up her first win as a Buff. Nelson defeated Utah State's Jade Brihante in three sets. After dropping the first set 6-2, Nelson responded with a 6-2 set of her own to force a tiebreaking third set. She picked up the win with a 10-5 third set victory.

Nelson continued into the consolation but fell to New Mexico's Sofia Taborga 7-5, 1-6, 10-5.

Carri Hayes had to withdraw from her flight A singles match, while Ellen Puzak fell to Utah State's Laure Eugenio de Hilario 6-4, 6-2. Both women will have the option to continue in the consolation tomorrow to close out the tournament alongside Nelson.

Action continues tomorrow in both tournaments, which will be the final day of competition for Colorado before heading to Las Vegas later this month to compete in the ITA Mountain Regional Championships.
