Sanford Confirms That WR Tyson Out For Rest Of Season
November 06, 2022 | Football, Neill Woelk
BOULDER — Colorado coach Mike Sanford confirmed Sunday evening what many Buffaloes fans had feared — leading CU receiver Jordyn Tyson will miss the rest of the season after suffering a significant lower leg injury in Saturday's game against Oregon.
Tyson had been blossoming into one of the Pac-12's up-and-coming stars. He leads CU in receptions and yards this season with 22 catches for 470 yards and four touchdowns, and his five overall touchdowns — he added one by punt return against Arizona State — also lead the team.
The true freshman from Allen, Texas, had put together an outstanding stretch in CU's last three games, catching 13 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns and also notching the 88-yard punt return for a score against the Sun Devils.
Against Oregon, he finished with five catches (tying his career high) for a career-best 137 yards, including an 81-yard scoring pass from J.T. Shrout. The play was CU's longest from scrimmage this season, eclipsing two 58-yard catches he made in the previous two weeks, one of which went for a score against ASU.
He was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week and special teams player of the week for his effort against Arizona State.
"It's confirmed that it's going to be a season-ending injury for Jordan," Sanford said Sunday evening. "It's really, really disappointing. He played some fantastic football in that game."
Tyson has been one of the few bright spots in the 1-8 Buffs' season thus far.
"The future is very bright for him and we expect him to make a full recovery," Sanford said. "(The injury) is nothing out of the norm with regards to football. We're putting everything in place for his family to make sure travel logistics, all of it, are taken care of. As a staff and medical staff, we're here to put everything in place to make sure that he had the best possible care."
Sanford said Daniel Arias could see more time at receiver in Tyson's absence, and the Buffs will also depend more heavily on sophomore Montana Lemonious-Craig, who is also having a solid season for CU. Sanford also said that sophomore Chase Penry could work back into the rotation. Penry has been nursing a nagging injury and has missed five of the last six games and has appeared in just three games for CU this season.
BUFFS NOTES: Sanford said safety Trevor Woods and defensive lineman Jalen Sami both graded out well in Saturday's game. Woods was credited with 10 tackles and a forced fumble while Sami had five tackles and a quarterback hurry … There was good news on running back Deion Smith, who had a good start to the game but didn't play after CU's early series. Sanford said Smith was held out more as a "precautionary" measure and he should be ready this week.
SHORT WEEK: The Buffs will compact their schedule this week, as they head to Los Angeles on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game against No. 8 USC at the Coliseum.
