Freshman Biwer To Rep CU In Genesis Collegiate Showcase

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team is set to open the spring portion of its 2021-22 season this Friday in the inaugural Wyoming Desert Match Play in Palm Desert, Calif.

It is the first time a CU team will open the spring in a match play event, and the first time in anything other than a dual match since the late 1960s before the sport moved on to mostly tournament events.

"We have been looking forward to starting the spring season ever since we left Hawaii at the end of October, head coach Roy Edwards said.  The Buffaloes finished second in the Ka'naapali Classic, their best effort of the fall which saw the team competing mostly with freshmen and is easily the youngest team in school history.

"Starting in Palm Desert and in a competitive match play event will be a great way to lead into the spring," Edwards said.  "The weather has been awful so far in Boulder and this is a great opportunity to find out what we are made of competitively without necessarily being our sharpest physically.  The best players find a way and I expect this crew to have a great week and this will be a solid springboard into the remainder of the season."

Six players will represent the eight teams competing in the event, with each playing in the same position for all three matches.  CU's lineup, in order from one through six: freshman Justin Biwer, freshman Dylan McDermott, junior Kristoffer Max, junior John Patterson, sophomore Adam Matteson and freshman Jack Holland.

Colorado played in five fall tournaments this fall, with four freshmen as designated scorers in four of those and three in the other.  While most had a few growing pains in their first semester of college competition, in the end three of CU's five frosh posted averages of 71.7 or better (with a fourth at 73.0); Biwer led the way with a 70.07, the best fall scoring average in school history.  McDermott was next with a 71.67 figure.  GolfStat rated the performance of CU's "Fab Five" as the best in the nation for the fall season.

Colorado is seeded third and will open against No. 6 seed Texas-El Paso.  Other matches are No. 1 San Francisco vs. No. 8 Air Force; No. 2 Boise State vs. No. 7 Wichita State; and No. 4 Denver vs. No. 5 Wyoming.  The teams were seeded based off their final fall standing in the GolfStat rankings: USF (#29), Boise State (#49), CU (#81), DU (#83), Wyoming (#139), UTEP (#148), Wichita State (#168) and Air Force (#271).

The event will take place at the Classic Club, a 7,322-yard, par-72 layout.  Two matches will be played on Friday (CU's tee times are set for 8:48 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. MST) with the final match at either 8:00 or 8:48 a.m. Saturday.

Biwer To Represent CU In Genesis Collegiate Showcase

Biwer will go from Palm Desert to Los Angeles to play in the 8th Annual Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase on Monday, Feb. 14 at Riviera Country Club.

Biwer will represent Colorado, which is one of 23 schools to enter a collegian in the event.  Other schools with a player in the field are: Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Pepperdine, San Jose State, Southern California, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, UNLV, Wake Forest, Washington and defending champion Wyoming.  The Pac-12 has the most schools in the field with seven.

"What a great opportunity for Justin and our program at Riviera on Monday," Edwards said.  Many thanks go out to a couple of special Buffs close to our team for making this happen."  Those are alums Steve Shaw and Doug Nock; Nock lettered for the Buffaloes in the 1980s.  Those two will join Biwer and a yet-to-be determined PGA Tour player to compete against other college-am teams in a best-ball round; the winner will receive a $50,000 donation to the school's golf program.  In addition, the top collegiate finisher will earn an exemption into the Genesis Invitational, set for later in the week, also at Riviera and hosted by Tiger Woods.
