February 21, 2022 | Men's Basketball
BOULDER – University of Colorado's K.J. Simpson has been named the Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week, for games played Feb. 14-20, the league office announced on Monday.
The Freshman of the Week honor is Colorado's third this season and the second for Simpson who also earned the award on Nov. 29. Julian Hammond III was Freshman of the Week on Jan. 10. It's the Buffaloes' fourth overall honor for an award just in its third year in existence. Jabari Walker earned the initial Buffaloes honor, on Jan. 18, 2021.
A 6-foot-2, 177-pound guard from West Hills, Calif., Simpson averaged 13.0 points and 3.0 rebounds helping the Buffaloes to three-straight road wins in a five-day span last week; just the program's second three-game conference road winning streak since 2002. He shot 44 percent from the field and 79 percent from the foul line, hitting 14 of 18 attempts.
Simpson scored in double-figures all three games including a career-high 19 points at California on Feb. 17. He recorded personal-bests at the free throw line knocking down 8 of 10 attempts. Simpson had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists at Oregon State and finished the week with 10 points, two rebounds and two steals at Stanford.
Colorado, 18-9 overall and in fifth place in the Pac-12 at 10-7, plays its last two regular season home games this week. The Buffaloes host Arizona State on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Network) and No. 2 Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m. (ESPN2 or ESPNU) on Senior Night. Both games will also air live on the Colorado Basketball Network, KOA 850 AM & 94.1 FM.
