Final Day Of Racing Canceled In Alaska, Buffs Finish Second

February 06, 2022 | Skiing

FAIRBANKS, Alaska—The final day of racing in Alaska was canceled Sunday as temperatures dipped down into the negatives here at Birch Hill Ski Area.

Despite that, the Colorado Buffaloes Ski Team moved up one spot to finish second in the official meet standings for the RMISA Invitational.

When one day of racing is canceled, for team standings the other day of racing is doubled to ensure an equally-weighted score between the alpine and Nordic portions of the meet.  The Buffs, who Saturday moved up from fifth to third, thus officially finish second with 584 points, 13 ahead of Denver's total of 571.  Utah won the meet with 707 points.

And with that, the regular season is now over for the Nordic teams, as just the RMISA Championships and NCAA Championships remain.  The RMISA Championships will be hosted by the Buffs in Steamboat Springs from February 23-26, and the NCAA Championships by the Utah Utes from March 9-12.  The alpine teams do have the Denver Invitational just ahead of the RMISA Championships, an alpine-only meet.

The Buffs did have a successful trip to Alaska, winning the UAF Nanook Invitational and moving up from fifth to second in the RMISA Invitational.

"We're of course disappointed that we weren't able to race today," CU Nordic coach Jana Weinberger said. "But I'm happy with how we performed overall.  We had some great performances here, won a meet and moved up three spots in the other, and hopefully we can continue those performances into Regionals in a few weeks."

The Buffs will be a little short-handed at the RMISA Championships on the Nordic side.  Karolina Kaleta, Weronika Kaleta, Will Koch, and Alexander Maurer will all be participating in the U23 and Junior World Championships, which take place February 22-27 in Lygna, Norway.  The Buffs won't be the only short-handed team, as Utah will have eight skiers participating and Montana State and Alaska Anchorage will both have skiers participating, as well.
