Buffaloes Fall To No.17 Washington

March 13, 2022 | Tennis

SEATTLE – The University of Colorado women's tennis team dropped its fourth conference match of the season here Sunday in a 6-1 loss to No.17-ranked Washington.

The Buffaloes (5-7, 0-4 Pac-12) are 0-4 against top-25 teams this season as Washington (13-4, 4-0 Pac-12) remains tied with UCLA at the top of the Pac-12 standings.

The match opened with the Huskies picking up the doubles point as Antonia Balzert and Mila Stanojevic lost the No.2 doubles match 6-0 followed by Ky Ecton and Betina Tokac dropping the No.3 doubles match 6-4. Caroline Pozo and Maria Campos were tied 5-5 when the doubles point was decided.

Washington rallied to the victory with four-straight singles victories before CU picked up a three-set No.6 singles match. Freshman Betina Tokac was the lone victor for Colorado, defeating Yolanda Lin despite dropping a close 7-5 first set. Tokac rallied back in a dominating form in the second set, taking it 6-1 to force a 10-point tiebreaker third set. She captured the win 10 points to four.

The match started with Maria Campos falling in the No.3 singles match to Nika Zupancic 6-2, 6-1. Mila Stanojevice lost the No.5 singles match to Kelly Leung 6-0, 7-5, making it just her second loss in 17 singles matches.

With the match on the line, Sarah-Maude Fortin clinched the win with a pair of 6-3 sets against Caroline Pozo in the No.2 singles match. Antonia Balzert had a strong battle in the No.1 singles match against Vanessa Wong but fell with a pair of 6-4 sets.

The final match of the evening saw Megan Forster lose to Hikaru Sato in three sets in the No.4 singles match. Forster picked up the first set 6-3, but fell in the next two 6-1, 6-2.

The Buffaloes return home for a short break before taking on in-state rival CSU Tuesday at noon. That match will be the first produced match for Colorado tennis with Thad Anderson calling the match. The Buffaloes also added a match to their schedule and will travel to Laramie to take on Wyoming Wednesday March 23 at 12 p.m.
