Biwer Shoots Low Round In The Third Round Tuesday
SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The University of Colorado men's golf team played much more like it was capable of in posting the fourth-best team score of the third round here Tuesday, but the Buffaloes remained in 12th place with one round to go in the 62nd Pac-12 Championships.
No. 8 and host Washington extended its second round lead after posting the best team score – a 1-under 354 – that has the Huskies at 5-under through 54 holes with a 1,060 team tally. No. 4 Arizona State held on to second place bit lost three strokes to UW and is now seven back at 1,067. No. 17 Stanford (1,069), No. 33 Oregon (1,079) and UCLA (1,083) fill out the rest of the top five, with the Ducks and Bruins swapping positions.
It was a complete turnaround for the Buffs, who turned in a 6-over 361 score, shaving 18 strokes off their second round total. Colorado couldn't move up in the standings as it still owns a 48-over score of 1,113, but is 15 strokes out of seventh. Much of the improvement came down to reducing big numbers, as the Buffaloes had just one hole worse than bogey Tuesday, matched only by Stanford in the field.
Freshman Justin Biwer recorded the best score in the 72-man field Tuesday, as his 4-under 67 was one of just seven in the 60s on the 6,979-yard, par-71 Aldarra Golf Course layout. He moved up the 28 spots from the midway point, the highest jump of anyone in the field Tuesday as he is tied for 12th with a 1-over 214 total. He had seven birdies, the most in the field, with eight pars and three bogeys with his 13 birdies overall tied for third-most through 54 holes. He had five of those birds on the front nine – four in the last five holes – when he shot a 32, which tied for the second-best score on the front side Tuesday.
The 67 tied seven other occasions for the third-lowest score by a Buffalo in a conference tournament; all but one have taken place in Pac-12 Championship events. It was Biwer's 11th round in the 60s and his 19th subpar round this season, now the third-most in CU history. Of the 20 freshmen competing here, he is now fourth among that group and is playing the par-4s at 2-over, tied for seventh-best in the field.
Junior John Paterson rebounded from a second round 81 to card a 1-under 70 Tuesday, jumping him 14 spots into a tie for 47th with a 10-over 223 total. The 11-stroke improvement was the third-most by a Buff from one round to the next in a Pac-12 Championship, as he had five birdies – including two in a row to start his day – and nine pars against four bogeys. He matched Biwer with a 32 on the front side.
Freshman Frederik Eisenbeis is tied for 54th with a 9-over 225 after firing a 6-over 77. He had a birdie and 11 pars with five bogeys and the only double by a Buff Tuesday (after he had four in the first 36 holes).
Freshman Dylan McDermott fashioned a 1-over 72 that has him at 13-over 226 heading into Wednesday's final round; he is tied for 56th. He managed to have a steady day with two birdies, a team-high 13 pars and three bogeys.
Sophomore Adam Matteson logged a third straight 76 for a 15-over 228 total, which has in 62nd place. He recorded two birdies and nine pars with seven bogeys, getting to that third 76 in a different fashion as he had no holes worse than bogey after enduring six Monday.
Junior Kristoffer Max turned in a 5-over 76, his best score here of the three, and at 19-over 232, he is 67th. He had one birdie and 11 pars opposite six bogeys.
"A much better day today," head coach Roy Edwards said. "Justin had a tremendous round and John played well. All six guys hung in there all day in some challenging conditions and did a really nice job of limiting their mistakes. That translated into a nice round."
Stanford's Barclay Brown maintained his second round lead with a 3-under 68 that has him in at 10-under 203 entering the final round. Washington's Noah Woolsey matched that 68 and is still one back at 9-under 204, but the next closest is Oregon's Yuki Moriyama who is in at 5-under 208.
