Final round Wednesday; CU frosh 1-over through 36 holes
NORMAN, Okla. — University of Colorado freshman golfer Justin Biwer fashioned a second round, 1-over par 73 here Tuesday in the NCAA Midwest/Norman Regional, remaining in contention to advance to the NCAA Finals individually.
The top five teams and one individual not on those five after the 54-hole meet will advance to the NCAA Finals later this month in Scottsdale, Ariz. Biwer, tied for 24th in the standings, is in a 1-over 145 through 36 holes, with four players not attached to teams currently at 3-under par. The situation is most fluid as it will change if the top five teams change; of the 23 players ahead of him, 14 are on those teams.
Biwer had three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys Tuesday on Oklahoma's Jimmie Auston Golf Club course (7,452-yard, par-72); through two rounds, he has an eagle, six birdies and 20 pars against nine bogeys. He is one of 25 in the field to not score worse than a bogey on any hole. He is playing the long par-5s (over 2,400 yards combined) at 5-under, tied for seventh-best in the 75-man field; he is 3-over on the par-4s and remained 3-over on the par-3s.
"Justin had a very similar day to yesterday, again not getting off to a great start but did a nice job battling back," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The wind really kicked up midway thru the round and made conditions difficult but he handled it well. He is still in position to shoot a low one tomorrow to have a chance."
He again opened with two bogeys on the first four holes (Nos. 1 and 4), but birdied the par-3 No. 6 to get back to 1-over, where he remained until a birdie on the par-5 13th. Biwer then bogeyed the next holes but rebounded with another birdie on 16 before parring out.
"I felt like I played better than yesterday, but funny enough my score didn't reflect that," Biwer said. "That's how golf just goes sometimes. I was really good off the tee and did give myself some good opportunities to score but just didn't always get it done. I'm still in decent position to make a move and give myself a chance to get to Grayhawk."
Biwer remained tied for fourth among the 18 freshmen competing here; he's also fourth among the 10 golfers invited to play as individuals.
No. 18 Auburn moved into the team lead with a 20-under 556 team score, leapfrogging host and No. 1 Oklahoma, as the Sooners are in at 14-under 562. No. 7 Texas and No. 25 Mississippi are tied for third (8-under 568) with No. 50 Utah rounding out the top five (4-under 572). The only other team under par is No. 24 South Carolina (3-under 573).
Texas' Travis Vick shot a second straight 67 to move into the lead for medalist honors, as he is at 10-under 134 through two rounds. Auburn's J.M. Butler is second at 9-under 135.
Biwer will tee off for the third straight day on No. 1 at 9:23 a.m. MDT for Wednesday's third and final round; this time he will be paired with Baylor's Johnny Keefer (even at 144) and Rider's Rick Van Der Nat (9-over 153).
NOTES: Temperatures reached the low 90s and the winds gusting up to 15-20 miles per hour over the last two hours of play Tuesday … Overall, 18 players are under par, four fewer than Monday, with another five sitting at even; there have been 19 rounds in the 60s overall, nine in the second round … The average score for 75 rounds on Tuesday was 73.84, slightly up from Monday, with the average for 150 rounds at 73.67.
