Young Named Academic All-American

June 14, 2022 | Skiing

BOULDER – Graduate student Joey Young was named second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America on its At-Large team Tuesday, continuing to add to his impressive list of academic accomplishments as a member of the Colorado Buffaloes Ski Team.

Young was named to the third team after his senior season a year ago, and is the sixth member of the ski team to earn Academic All-America honors and is one of 67 honorees in CU history.  He is just the second two-time honoree from the CU ski team.

Young graduated from the Leeds School of Business with degrees in both Accounting and Finance prior to the start of his fifth season, which he was granted due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  He was CU's Scholar Athlete winner as having the top GPA of all senior male student-athletes at Colorado.

Young was accepted into graduate school at CU and worked toward a Master's Degree in Finance for the 2021-22 school year, earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.

On the slopes, he set new CU standards for race starts (60), finishes (49) and accumulated 39 top 20 finishes including 20 top 10, seven top five with three podiums and two race wins.  He is also the first known five-time letterwinner in program history.

Young is one of three skiers to earn mention on the first, second or third team along with Utah's Samuel Hendry and Montana State's Riley Seger.  To put into perspective how hard it is to make the CoSIDA All-America At-Large team, more than 400 skiers nationally boast above a 3.5 cumulative GPA and were named to the National All-Academic Ski Team by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association.  The At-Large team combines 26 NCAA sponsored sports and District 7 consists of all institutions in eight states, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.  Literally thousands of student-athletes are academically eligible for the at-large program every season.

Young joins Kelly McCann (1996), Ondrej Valentina (1998), Linda Wikstrom (2000), Andreas Haug (2013, '14), and Rune Oedegaard (2015) as Academic All-Americans for the Buffs ski team.
