McDermott Leads Buffs For Second Straight Tournament
COLORADO SPRINGS — The University of Colorado men's golf team record a second top five finish for the week in capturing second place honors in Air Force's Gene Miranda Invitational which was completed here Sunday.
Colorado State pulled away from the field in the final round and won with a 30-under par 834 score, as the Rams closed with a 17-under 271. The Buffaloes shot a 4-under 284 for a 5-under 859, moving into the runner-up slot from third place in the process. San Jose State slipped from second into a tie for third with New Mexico State (3-under 861's), while Wofford claimed fifth at 4-over 868.
Five of the six rounds by the Buffaloes in the young season have been under par, with the sixth an even par total recorded in Saturday's cold and rainy conditions here.
Sophomore Dylan McDermott led CU for the second straight tournament, finishing with a 3-under 213 after a 1-under 71 Sunday on the 7,541-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Blue Golf Course layout. He recorded another solid consistent performance with 10 birdies, 37 pars and seven bogeys. He played the 12 par-5's at 7-under over the weekend, tied for second in the 120-man field.
For the week, he owned a 68.8 stroke average with five subpar rounds (four in the 60's); the other was a 1-over 73 in Saturday's sloppy conditions. He was medalist in Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Classic on Monday (10-under 200), leading the Buffs to a fifth-place finish.
All three other scorers for CU on Sunday also closed with 1-under par 71's.
Sophomore Justin Biwer finished tied for 13th with a 2-under 214; it was his 10th subpar effort in 13 collegiate tournaments, as he continues on an unprecedented pace in school history. He had 10 birdies and 37 pars with six bogeys and a double all told.
Sophomore Tucker Clark ended in a tie for 24th, slashing a stroke off his previous rounds (73-72-71) to post an even 216 total. He had nine birdies and 37 pars opposite seven bogeys and a double as he was the only one of the five designated scorers to score better in each round than the previous one.
Senior Adam Matteson tied for 36th with a 4-over 220; he played the par-3s at 1-under, tying for second-best overall, with his 39 pars tying for fifth in the field.
True freshman Hunter Swanson tied for 79th after firing a 10-over 82, his first round out of six higher than a 73. He had two birdies and six pars but was undone in the final round by eight bogeys and two back-to-back doubles; he did score his birdies over the last four holes to close on a positive note (and had nine birdies overall).
In the Miranda Individual Invitational for additional players from most schools, sophomore Frederik Eisenbeis tied for fifth place with a 4-under 212 effort on the 6,510-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Silver Course. He opened with a 74, scaled it down to a 71 and then matched the tourney low with a 5-under 67 Sunday. He closed strong with six birdies and 11 pars against a single bogey; his 14 birdies were the most by a Buff in either event this weekend.
Sophomores Jack Holland and Jack Hughes and true freshman Robby Keilch all finished with 1-over par 217 scores, tying for 13th. Hughes opened with a 4-under 68 before finishing with a 76 and 73; Holland was consistent as could be in each round, carding rounds of 72, 72 and 73 with nine birdies (three in each round), 37 pars, eight bogeys and a double. It was Keilch's first collegiate event and posted rounds of 70, 74 and 73 and scored an eagle Sunday while not posting a score higher than bogey all weekend.
"We really didn't play very well this weekend, but for the team to finish second and beat 22 teams is a testament to their grittiness and competitiveness," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We were very impressed with how the team battled and kept competing. That is going to be huge for us the rest of the season.
"Justin and Dylan continued to lead us and they competed and fought as well as anyone. We see a lot of very positive signs. We have a little time before we head to Albuquerque in 10 days and will be a great opportunity for us to continue to get better."
Next up for the Buffaloes will be their annual participation in New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, as CU is one of just three teams to play in all 66 previous events in its history.
NOTES: CU posted a 22-1 record in the meet, upping its record against Division I opponents to 32-5 for the young season … The average score for all 359 rounds for the event 74.58, with a low of 74.19 in Sunday's final round … CU's average for its four scorers was exactly three below at 71.58 … The Buffs played the par-3s at 7-over (second-best in the field), the par-4s at 13-over (fourth) and the par-5's at 10-under (tied for fifth) … CU had the ninth-most birdies (44; CSU led with 59) and the second-most pars (179; Weber State had 182) … The team stroke average for the week was 71.69 for 42 rounds.
