SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado women's golf team opened the 2022-23 season in seventh place after the first two rounds of the University of San Francisco Intercollegiate at The Olympic Club Ocean Course on Monday.
Â
Colorado shot 17-over par, a two-round total of 585, at the 5,976 par 71 Ocean Course. The Buffaloes sit six strokes behind Oregon State and seven outside the Top 5 where BYU resides in fifth.
Â
UCLA is the leader after day one, shooting 4-under, 564, for the first 36 holes. California is in second place at 2-under, 566, carding the only other under-par 36-holes in the field. Pepperdine is in third at 1-over, 569.
Â
Ty Akabane of UCLA is the individual leader at 6-under, 136, after shooting a pair of 68s. Allysha Mae Mateo is second, one-stroke back at 137.
Â
Colorado made a solid improvement between rounds one and two. The Buffaloes were in ninth place at 12-over after 18 holes, but improved by seven strokes in the second round, jumping up into the seventh spot.
Â
"Not quite how we wanted to play, but we did see a lot of positives," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "Too many big numbers – doubles and triples, but still a lot of positives."
Â
Sophomore Lauren Gooding was Colorado's top performer, shooting 3-over, 145, sitting in 18th place after two rounds. Gooding rebounded from a first round 75, to shoot the Buffaloes' low round of the day with a 1-under 70 in the second. She had eight birdies on the day – tying for fourth best in the field – and three of those came on her final eight holes to finish off her third collegiate under par round.
Â
Junior Hailey Schalk and sophomore Natalie Vo are both tied for 25th, two shots back of Gooding at 5-over, 147. Schalk was even through her first 16 holes, but logged a triple bogey at the par-4 No. 8 to fall to 3-over, but immediately responded with a birdie at the No. 9 to round out her first 18 holes. Schalk had a pair of birdies early in her second round and finished with a 74.
Â
Vo had the steadiest 36 holes of the afternoon as the lone Buff not to score any higher than a bogey. She had a 73 in the first round with the help of consecutive birdies at the par-5, No. 11 and par-4, No. 12. Vo parred 13 of the 18 holes in round No. 2, logging a birdie at No. 18 and finishing with a 74.
Â
Freshman Morgan Miller, who earned Colorado's top spot in qualifying, is tied for 30th overall at 6-over, 148. Miller was 1-under early, with a birdie on her fifth hole, at No. 12. She struggled down the stretch going 5-over on her back nine to finish her first collegiate round with a 76. Miller rallied on the final 18 holes, logging the second-best round behind Gooding with a 72. She parred 17 of 18 holes in the second round, including the first 16.
Â
Freshman Makenzie Cooper rounded out the Buffaloes' effort, currently tied for 38th with an 8-over, 150. Cooper birdied her first career hole, at the 141-yard, par 3, No. 10, but had bogeys on three of the next four. She played even over the next 10 holes and finished her first round with a 74. Cooper shot a 76 in the second round, highlighted by birdies at No. 18 and the 149-yard par 3, No. 5.
Â
"It's not the scores we wanted to shoot, but we're not that far off," Kelly said. "Plus with two freshmen in their first tournament, a 36-hole day. It's a lot, it always is. I think they got feeling a little more comfortable and I really feel like everybody will improve tomorrow.
Â
"We just need to clean up a lot with our putting – way too many three putts. But, overall I think we take away a lot of positives. There were some really good shots and great ball striking. I know Morgan hit it great in the practice round but not quite as well today, but she kept fighting. Hailey had a triple and then came back with a birdie. So they showed a lot of heart and fight and its just the simple stuff. Clean up our short game and a little big of course management."
Â
Colorado will tee off in Tuesday's final round at 9:44 a.m. MT. Four Buffaloes will split into two foursomes paired with Santa Clara. Gooding, Colorado's top golfer on Monday, will tee off at 10:06 a.m. with golfers from Santa Clara, BYU and Oregon State.
