Golfers Finish Ninth At UNM Tucker

Biwer, McDermott Tie For 10th
ALBUQUERQUE — The University of Colorado men's golf team had the same basic result here Saturday in the third and final round of New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, that being a strong start but finishing with struggles down the stretch as the Buffaloes finished ninth.
San Diego State held off host New Mexico to win the team title, as the Aztecs won with a 16-under 848 total; the Lobos were eight back at 856. UNLV finished third (858), TCU fourth (860) and Brigham Young fifth (861, as the Cougars shot the best round of the day, an 8-under 280, one of just three subpar scores in the final round).
Colorado appeared to be on its way to scoring a round under par, at one point being 6-under early in the round. But as was the case the first two rounds, the Buffs lost nine strokes to par over the last five holes and wound up closing with a 6-over 294, for an overall score of 16-over 880.
Sophomores Justin Biwer and Dylan McDermott led the Buffaloes here, as both tied for 10th individually with 3-under par 213 scores; McDermott had CU's low round of the day, a 2-under 70 on the 7,546-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Golf Course layout, while Biwer recorded a 1-over 73.
McDermott had a team-high six birdies Saturday (along with 13 for the meet, also a team-best and fifth-most in the field), with eight pars and four bogeys. Biwer had three birdies and 12 pars, with two bogeys and a double, those later uncharacteristically coming over his last four holes as he was 3-under through 14.
Senior Adam Matteson tied for 62nd as he wrapped things with a 4-over 74 and a 9-over 225 for the tourney. He had seven birdies and 31 pars opposite 16 bogeys the only Buff not to endure a hole worse than bogey in the event.
Sophomore Tucker Clark closed with a 5-over 77 that gave him a 13-over 229 score, tying him for 83rd. He had two birdies and 11 pars with three bogeys and two doubles Saturday.
Sophomore Frederik Eisenbeis tied for 98th after carding his best score in the three rounds – a 5-over 77 – as he was 19-over (235) in his first time as a designated scorer for the team this season. He had two birdies and nine pars opposite seven bogeys.
"Justin and Dylan had nice events, ," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The rest of us weren't at our best, just kind of labored to get much going. It's a great opportunity for us to get better over the next week and be ready for the Simpson."
The Buffaloes will return to action in nine days, as they will host the 12th Annual Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational at Boulder Country Club, October 3-4.
NOTES: The average score for all 312 rounds over the two days was 74.18, with a 74.49 average for the final round … The Buffs played the par-3s at 16-over (tied for ninth-best in the field), the par-4s at 35-over (tied for eighth) and the par-5's at just 16-under (11th) … CU tied for the ninth-most birdies after scoring 18 Saturday (44 total; New Mexico topped all with 58) and the eighth-most pars (155; San Francisco led with 169) ... CU posted a 10-8 record in the meet, improving its record against Division I opponents to 42-13 for the season … Biwer has now been under par in 11 of 14 career tournaments, while McDermott has been in the red in seven of 13.
