Buffs Complete Second Straight Sweep
September 25, 2022 | Volleyball
BOULDER — Colorado women's volleyball took down Arizona State in three sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-17) here Sunday afternoon to open up conference play with back-to-back sweeps.
The Buffaloes (10-2, 2-0 Pac-12) dominated the Sun Devils (7-7, 1-1 Pac-12) allowing only 25 kills on 110 attacks to improve their record at home to 7-0 this season.
Lexi Hadrych and Meegan Hart impressed offensively as they combined for 27 of the team's 49 total kills. Hadrych led all players in kills with 14 while Hart finished with 13. Hart continued her efficient play recording her season-high in hitting percentage with .706 bringing her season average up to .500. This weekend she averaged a hitting percentage of .655 and it is her third straight match while hitting over .583.
Savannah Perry served well for CU as she had four of the team's six service aces, three of which came consecutively. Taylor Simpson totaled 29 assists which were eight more than the entire Arizona State team.
Colorado didn't allow a single ASU player to reach double figures in kills, holding the Sun Devils to a hitting percentage of just .100. The Buffaloes' defense continued their great play this season with 60 digs compared to Arizona State's 39.
With the win today, CU joins Oregon as the only two teams in the Pac-12 to start off conference play 2-0 thus far, with Washington having an opportunity to join them tonight against UCLA.
Colorado women's volleyball will travel to Los Angeles next week to take on USC on September 30th and UCLA on October 2nd.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE: After going down 6-4 early in the set, Colorado went on a five-point scoring run behind Perry's three straight service aces to take a 9-6 lead. Parker subbed in and got a quick kill to give the Buffs a 15-12 lead and force an Arizona State timeout. The three-point lead continued to 19-16 before ASU called its second and final timeout of the set. Out of the break, a CU attack error ended its 4-0 scoring run. Hadrych's sixth kill while hitting .556 gave Colorado a 22-17 lead. A combined block between Kuehl and Parker set up a Buffs' set point. CU won the set 25-18 following a kill from Tabron.
SET TWO: Colorado answered a Sun Devils' three-point scoring run with five unanswered points to go up 8-4. Arizona State called its first timeout while trailing 13-8. Shortly after the timeout, a successful game challenge from the Buffs gave them a seven-point lead at 15-8. Kuehl and Parker picked up their second blocks of the match to take a 16-10 lead and force another ASU timeout. A 3-0 scoring run gave CU an eight-point lead at 20-12. Hart reached double-digit kills with a .750 hitting percentage as Colorado led 23-13. The Buffs earned set point following a kill from Schneggenburger. Hadrych also reached double-digit kills as CU took the set 25-15.
SET THREE: Colorado jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead to start the set. The Buffs held a 9-4 advantage which led to a Sun Devils timeout following Schneggenburger's fifth kill of the match. On 2-0 Start in Conference Play
"Yeah, as we know the conference can be a buzzsaw at times, and every team you're going to play every weekend is very good. I thought that Arizona State coming in after just taking care of Arizona and having the talent that they have, I thought it would be a very good challenge for us and obviously, it was. I'm really happy with what we did from a defensive standpoint. Serving and defense were particularly good today and our players had a game plan and they followed it really well. Then on top of that, we had some really efficient attacking, especially out of the middle today, so a really good start to the season and get to go on the road to LA next week and we'll need to continue to get better but happy with where we are, at this point."
On Ever Having A Player Hit 500
"This is going be anti-climatic but yes I have. However, it is super rare and Meegan's being a little humble. She's really worked herself. She came here a great player and to her credit, she's gotten better every season and really playing at a high level right now, and as efficient as I've seen. She's still got a little bit of ceiling she can hit these next couple of months and I'm excited for her to get there."
On the Upcoming LA Trip
"Yeah, I think every weekend is a challenge, especially on the road and so we're going to take a day off. We've done a really nice job of taking care of our bodies and practicing at a pretty high level which is hard to do. It takes a lot of work to do that, especially on your off days even. We've been practicing pretty heavy and at a high level as well. We get a couple of days of work in on Tuesday and Wednesday and prepare for two teams that actually play a little bit different styles, so we have to get ready for that. But a 2-0 start is a great place to be at and hopefully, we can build on it."
Outside Hitter Lexi Hadrych
On Lexi's Offensive Plan
"Honestly, Taylor was setting incredibly well. Everything was to the perfect point that you would want to hit it at even ones where she was running and sprinting and falling she got to the perfect point. Honestly, it was just her sets and our passes were amazing and I just went up and swung."
On Returning to UCLA
"Well, I want to win. That would be very fun. It'll be interesting to return to a familiar place and everything but LA is LA. I like Colorado."
Middle Blocker Meegan Hart
On Hitting Season High .700
"I think just focusing on doing my job. I obviously want to give a lot of credit to our passers for putting us in a great position and our setters for giving me the ball. I had to go up there and swing but I think just being confident when I go up and swing and trying to see the block and switch up my shots too."
On Performance in Pac-12 Play So Far
"So far, so good, obviously we're 2-0. This year we're really excited. I feel like in conference play it's kind of anyone's title. I think we're really excited to see how it plays out."
