Colorado Closes out the Weekend at UW
October 21, 2023 | Soccer
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT in Seattle
SEATTLE — The Colorado Buffaloes hope to get back in the win column when they take on the Washington Huskies on Sunday. The Buffs enter the match on the wrong end of a four-game winless streak.
Â
Thursday's loss was the first for CU on the road this season. The Buffs four wins away from Boulder are the most since 2018 (5).
Â
"We're looking forward to having an opportunity to bounce back," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "There were some positives we can take out of Thursday, but it's tough to get results on the road and in the Pac-12."
Â
Colorado (10-4-2, 2-3-2 Pac-12) got the weekend started with a 1-0 loss at Washington State on Thursday. The Buffs held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal over the Cougars, but the one shot for WSU found the back of the net. CU played without its leading goal-scorer, Shyra James, against the Cougars. The Buffs would only get five shots on Thursday without her in the lineup.
Â
The last CU goal to come from outside of James was Emerson Layne's goal in the 25th minute at Oregon State. Since then Colorado has scored two goals, both from James, in the last four matches.
Â
"I thought we defended well for, for the most part on Thursday," head coach Danny Sanchez reiterated. "We didn't create enough opportunities. Washington is on a roll defensively and attack-wise. We're still going to have to be stingy defensively, but we're really going to have to create more on the attack.
Â
"I thought we pressed a little bit once we broke the pressure on Thursday and got a little impatient. We're going to have to be better with the ball in the final third to create more opportunities."
Â
Washington (7-5-3, 2-4-1 Pac-12) is unbeaten in its last three matches. The Huskies have wins over Arizona and Utah and a draw against No. 2 Stanford in the stretch. UW has scored eight goals in the last three matches. Olivia Juarez, the reigning Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week, has made 21 saves in the three matches, allowing five goals.
Â
Sunday's match will be carried on Pac-12 Washington and is set for a 1 p.m. MT kickoff.
