Golfers Slip Into 18th In Ka'anapali Classic

October 27, 2023 | Men's Golf

Swanson continues to pace Buffaloes

LAHAINA, Maui — The University of Colorado men's golf team was looking to follow a pedestrian opening round with a solid one here Friday, but instead struggled in the opposite direction to slip three spots into 18th after two rounds of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic, the Buffaloes' final tournament of the fall season.

Liberty is riding the wave of three players in the top seven, adding a shot to its first round lead with a 34-under par 534 team score.  The Flames are easily playing their best tournament of the fall, having finished ninth, 14th and sixth in their previous three events.  No. 17 East Tennessee State and No. 19 Oklahoma are tied for second, moving up a spot as both shot the same exact score again (a 17-under 267, the day's best) and are in at 29-under 539.  North Florida is fourth (545) with San Jose State rounding out the top five (546).

The Buffaloes never got on a roll, turning in a 9-over 293 Friday for a 13-over 581 score.  That dropped CU from a tie for 15th into 18th heading into the third and final round, which is also the final one this fall for the team.  Starting spaced apart on the back nine, the Buffs had four bogeys and a double before scoring their first birdie in the round.

Sophomore Hunter Swanson paced the Buffaloes for the second straight day, turning in an even-par effort on the 6,700-yard, par-71 Royal Ka'anapali Course at Ka'anapali Golf Club.  Through 36 holes, he's in a 2-under 140 and tied for 44th the best by a CU duffer entering the final round.  He eagled the 405-yard, par-4 14th hole, the only player to do so over the two rounds as he holed out with a knockdown 9-iron from the left center of the fairway, some 134 yards from the pin.  It was his team-best fifth eagle of the fall season.  In addition, he had two birdies and 11 pars, tying for the team-high, and four bogeys.

Junior Justin Biwer matched Swanson's even-par 71 for CU's best second round score, and he's in at 3-over 145 to stand tied for 77th.  His round was bolstered by his second eagle of the fall, which he made on the 460-yard, par-5 6th hole.  He also had two birdies and 11 pars opposite four bogeys Friday.

Freshman Brandon Knight is tied for 94th after shaving a stroke off his first round effort, as his 3-over 74 has him with a 36-hole total of 7-over 149.  He had two birdies and tied for the team-high with 11 pars against five bogeys.  He was even through 14 holes, but had three of his bogeys down the stretch on his final four holes.

Junior Dylan McDermott had some rare troubles Friday, carding a 9-over 80 after he opened in red numbers (70); he's tied for 99th with an 8-over 150 score.  He had two birdies, back-to-back late in the round, but he finished with a bogey and a double right afterward.  He otherwise had eight pars, five other bogeys and a triple (just the fourth of his career in 1,548 holes).  It was also just his second time in the 80's in his college career in 86 rounds.

Junior Jack Holland is tied for 106th after carding a 6-over 77, which has him 10-over with a 152 total.  He had a team-high three birdies on Friday, which went with eight pars against five bogeys and two doubles, the latter coming in his first six holes.  He then settled down and played the remaining 12 on his day at 1-over.

"It was a tough day to say the least," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "The guys are down, we were expecting to do much better.  We need a low round tomorrow and we are expecting one.  That would at least end the fall season on a little bit better of a note."

Two players share the lead with 12-under 130 scores, Mats Ege of East Tennessee State and Josh Ryan of Liberty; they lead to others by one shot.

The third and final round will conclude with a third straight shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. MDT Saturday.  Colorado will be paired in foursomes with Air Force, Denver and Mount St. Mary's and will start on the 13th through 15th tees.

NOTES: This is the final event of the fall season for the Buffaloes, who will start the spring season exactly three months after this event, resuming play in the Southwestern Intercollegiate in Westlake Village, Calif., on January 28 … McDermott's other round in the 80's was an 81 in the second round of last winter's Oregon Duck Invitational; he rebounded to shoot an even-par 71 in the final round … The average score for all 240 rounds thus far is 71.47 (71.73 on Friday, up half a stroke from 71.22 for the first round); 56 players are under par through 36 holes, with eight others even … The Buffs are tied for 17th in birdies (30, just 11 in the second round; Liberty leads with 51), and are tied for 14th in pars (98; Oklahoma tops that list with 116).  CU is one of 14 teams with two eagles (tied for fourth; UConn has four to lead) … Colorado is playing the par-4 holes the best of the three configurations, at 16-over the 16th best in the field; its playing the par-3s tied for 18th best (12-over), and the par-5s the 19th best at 2-under, uncharacteristic for the team which has usually been near the top all year on the par-5 holes.
