Buffs Close Out Ron Moore Intercollegiate In Eighth

October 08, 2023 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — University of Colorado sophomore Morgan Miller notched her second-straight top three finish as the Buffaloes closed out the 2023 Ron Moore Intercollegiate in eighth place at the University of Denver Golf Course, Sunday.

Miller shot 1-under-par 71 in the final round to finish in sole possession of third place with a 54-hole score of 9-under, 207. Her school-record streak of rounds in the 60s ended at four, but she tied another team record on Sunday with her sixth-consecutive round shooting under par.

Miller had a shot at the title. She was tied for the lead with Kansas' Jordan Rothman Denver's Anna Zanusso at 10-under on the 53rd hole for all three golfers. Unfortunately, Miller made bogey on No. 7, a 385-yard par 4, while Rothman birdied her final hole on the 486-yard par 5, No. 18 to clinch medalist honors at 11-under. Zanusso, who closed out with par on No. 18, was second at 10-under.

Colorado dropped back one spot in the team standings after shooting, 2-over, in the final round, claiming a 54-hole score of 1-over, 865.

California took the team title, erasing a 13-stroke deficit in the final round to edge host Denver by a single stroke. The Golden Bears shot 8-under in the final round to finish at 21-under, 843. The Pioneers played their home course at 6-over on Sunday to finish at 20-under, 844.

Miller, who began at No. 8 with the shotgun start, was at 2-under early for the round with an eagle on the 464-yard, par 5, No. 11 which got her to 10-under for the tournament. She stayed there through 15 holes before a bogey on the 183-yard par 3, No. 5. Miller rebounded with a birdie-3 on No. 6 to retake a share of the lead before falling back on the 54th hole.

"Morgan played well, we are very proud of the effort she gave," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "Winning isn't easy, but she keeps putting herself I position. Her chance will come."

Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal gave the Buffaloes a second top 20 finish, shooting 71 in the final round to tie for 17th overall at 2-under, 214. Iqbal was 1-over through 11 holes, but got back into the red with birdies on a pair of par 4s at No. 1 and No. 3. She closed out her round with four-straight pars for her third top 20 finish in as many fall tournaments.

Freshman Vanessa Ngo, playing as an individual, finished tied for 42nd overall at 5-over, 221, after carding a 4-over, 76, in the final round. Ngo struggled early, but rallied for the Buffs' best finish of the day. She was 4-over through just four holes and fell to 7-over through 11, but made birdie on three of her final five holes to end the round.

Senior Hailey Schalk tied for 51st overall at 7-over, 223 after a second-straight solid round. Schalk followed up Saturday's even-par round with a 2-over, 74, on Sunday. She parred 13 of 18 holes and added a birdie at the 170-yard par 3, No. 4

Freshman Francesca Sumcad tied for 55th overall at 8-over, 224. Sumcad shot a 74 in the final round, highlighted by an eagle at No. 18, her second in three rounds on that hole.

Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding was 72nd overall at 13-over, 229, after recording a 78 in the final round.

"Not the day we had hoped for," Kelly said. "The team gave it their all, but we just couldn't seem to get the birdies to fall and get on a roll."

Colorado returns to action for the Stanford Intercollegiate, Oct. 20-22, in Stanford, Calif.
