Buffs Have Successful First Day Of Newcomer Additions
December 20, 2023 | Football
BOULDER – As Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders enters his second year at the helm, the Colorado Buffaloes Football Team had a successful first day of adding newcomers for the 2024 season with the first day of the early signing period complete.Â
In the ever-changing world of college football, what used to be one primary day among a small signing period has turned into several months of transfer portal openings, additional signing periods and countless other ways to enhance your roster. Â Coach Prime's recruiting staff will continue to work nonstop in the short term and long term to get as many high-star and high-caliber players as possible for the Buffs. Â
As the dust settles on the first day of the early signing period, the Buffs bolstered their 2024 roster by 21 players, filling many positions of need including five edge players and two interior defensive linemen and four offensive linemen. Â Additionally, the players include four receivers, two quarterbacks and one each at defensive back, running back, athlete and tight end. Â
The transfer class ranks No. 1 near the end of the day Wednesday and the overall rank is No. 21, both matching the final numbers from CU's 2023 class and overall ranking. Â The No. 21 overall rank the last two seasons is the best at CU in 15 seasons and CU again finds itself at the top of the transfer class rankings.Â
The signees include five high school players, 14 undergraduate transfers and two graduate transfers. Â They hail from 10 states as Texas leads the way with seven followed by Georgia with four. Â A total of 15 of the 17 transfers come from Power 4 conferences including seven from SEC schools, five from Big 12, three from ACC and one from Big Ten schools. Â
Nine of the 21 come in as four-star recruits, which is already the most four-star recruits for a single class in CU history, with 247 having data back about 25 years. Â Three other transfers currently listed as three-star players were four-star recruits coming out of high school. Â
The early signing period will conclude Friday and the Buffs will continue to recruit heavily over that time. Â The transfer portal has been open since Dec. 5 and will remain so until Jan. 2. Â The second signing period will begin Feb. 7 and run through April 1 and the portal will again open after spring football from April 15-30. Â The portal openings are just when players can enter, not when they can sign out of the portal. Â
Last season, the Buffs flipped their roster like college football had never been seen with 68 scholarship players eventually being part of the newcomer class. Â
