San Diego Edges CU Golfers For Wyoming World Match Play Title

Buffs, Toreros battle until final putts

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team lost in the championship final in Wyoming's World Match Play here Saturday to the University of San Diego in a match that wasn't decided until the final putts.

The Toreros edged the Buffaloes, 3½- 2½, as USD won three matches and CU two, with the sixth a draw.  San Diego, the No. 2 seed here, won 31 holes, Colorado (the top seed) 30 with 44 tied among the dozen competitors on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club Course.

"It was a great, very competitive match today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Things went back and forth all day with lots of good golf from all 12 players.  It was frustrating to come up just short.  But we saw a lot of good golf from every player this week and it was a really good way to start the spring."

CU's stroke leader in the fall with a 69.7 average, sophomore Dylan McDermott, picked up where he left off as he won all three of his matches here.  He topped San Diego's top player, Carson Enright, 3 and 1, winning seven holes to four with six ties.  He fell behind after the first hole, tied the match up through four, and then won three straight holes – scoring par on all – and never trailed again.

Sophomore Jack Holland won CU's other match, 2 and 1 over David Rauch.  Rauch led by one through seven, Holland caught him on No. 8 and took lead for good after he birdied No. 13.  The close match saw the players tie on 10 of the18 holes.

Sophomore Justin Biwer tied for the second time here, finishing all-square against Andy Xu.  Each player won four holes with 10 ties; down by two through 15 holes, Biwer finished par-par-birdie to force the tie.

Sophomores Tucker Clark and Jack Hughes and freshman Hunter Swanson all lost close matches, Clark and Hughes 2 and 1 – though neither never led – and Swanson 2-up.  Clark did win five holes and tied five, while Hughes won three and tied nine.  The frosh had the wildest ride of the day by any Buff against Evan Kawai: the two only tied on four holes, with Swanson winning six and Kawai eight, including the last two to help clinch the win for the Cowboys.

McDermott will represent Colorado in Monday's second annual Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on the westside of Los Angeles.  The event is sponsored by the Tiger Woods Foundation with the format calling for one college player to be paired with a current PGA Tour player (which will be determined Sunday) and two donors to each school's program.  Former Buff Doug Nock and longtime donor Steve Shaw will fill out the foursome, with CU assistant coach Derek Tolan set to caddy for McDermott.

The Buffaloes return to action later this month traveling right back to Palm Desert to face Nevada in a dual match on Feb. 27 and then March 1-3 in Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate.

NOTES: Colorado came into this weekend ranked No. 46 by GolfStat; San Diego was 83rd … CU defeated South Dakota State 4½-1½ in the quarterfinals and host Wyoming 4-2 in the semifinals … In the three matches here, the Buffs won 91 holes, lost 71 and tied 139 … Final match records here were: McDermott (3-0), Biwer (1-0-2), Hughes (2-1), Swanson (2-1), Holland (1-2), Clark (0-1-2).
