Buffs Go 2-0 In Washington Over the Weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. – In a unique day of back-to-back matches, the Colorado Women's Tennis will leave
Washington with two victories, topping both Gonzaga and Eastern Washington here Saturday.

Starting the day against Gonzaga, the Buffs took control early clinching the doubles point followed by
two singles victories to build an early 3-0 lead. After the Zags pulled within 3-2, Aya El Sayed provided
the clinching win in a second-set tiebreaker to give the Buffs a 4-2 win. El Sayed has now provided the
clinching match in three of CU's first four wins on the season.

After a short break, the Buffs returned to the court to take on Eastern Washington. The Buffs
dominated and after clinching the doubles point, took the first three singles matches to win 4-0 with
Antonia Balzert providing the clinching point at No. 1 singles.

Gonzaga
  • In the first match of the day at No. 3 doubles Rose Hayes and Kianna Oda beat Ellen Puzak and
  • Betina Tokac 6-3.
  • In the next match at No. 2 doubles the Buffs got their first win behind Mila Stanojevic and Elys
  • Ventura defeating Tiegan Aitken and Jenna Sloan 6-4.
  • Almost immediately after the Buffs clinched the doubles point at No. 1 doubles as Antonia
  • Balzert and Aya El Sayed defeated Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska 6-4.
  • The Buffs started singles out strong with a dominating victory by Betina Tokac at No. 5 singles
  • over Rose Hayes 6-1, 6-1.
  • The Buffs extended the lead at No. 3 singles behind an incredible effort from Mila Stanojevic
  • coming back from 4-0 at the beginning of the first set to defeat Jenna Sloan in straight sets 7-5,
  • 6-3.
  • Gonzaga started to claw back with a victory at No. 1 singles by Cate Broerman over Antonia
  • Balzert 7-6(5), 6-4.
  • The Buffs then clinched the match at No. 4 singles in straight sets. Aya El Sayed defeated Kianna
  • Oda in a tight second set tiebreaker 6-4, 7-6(5) to clinch the match for Colorado.
  • At No. 2 singles the match was left unfinished between Elys Ventura and Adrianna Sosnowska 3-
  • 6, 7-5, 4-4, unfinished.
Eastern Washington
  • The Buffs started hot getting the first match win at No. 2 doubles with a 6-1 victory from Mila
  • Stanojevic and Elys Ventura over Renata Gabuzyan and Kenzington Mann.
  • Ellen Puzak and Betina Tokac clinched the doubles point at No.3 doubles in the next match
  • defeating Scout Mathews and Sara Vasic 6-4.
  • No. 1 doubles was unfinished between Colorado's Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed and Eastern
  • Washington's Isabella Foshee and Leandra Nizetic leaving at a score of 5-4.
  • Mila Stanojevic continued her day with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Leandra Nizetic.
  • At No. 6 singles Ellen Puzak took control of the match early against Sara Vasic, winning 6-0, 6-3.
  • In a quick second match Antonia Balzert clinched with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Scout Mathews at
  • No. 1 singles.
  • The remaining matches at No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 singles were unfinished.

Notes
  • The Buffs start 5-1 for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
  • The Gonzaga match is the third match this season that Aya El Sayed has clinched the win.
  • The Buffs remain unbeaten against Gonzaga at 3-0.
  • Colorado remains unbeaten against Eastern Washington at 2-0. 
  • Freshman Carri Hayes got first set win of her career against Gonzaga.

Up Next
Next week the Buffs host two matches starting with BYU on Friday February 17 at 6:00 p.m. MST.
Followed by Indiana on Sunday February 19 at 10:00 a.m. MST, with both taking place at the Meadows
Club in Boulder. The Indiana match will be a Leukemia awareness match and CU's two signees from
Team IMPACT, Clara and Allison Chi-Hasselback, will be in attendance.
