CU heads to Palm Desert For Wyoming World Match Play
BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team will open the spring portion of its schedule Friday in Wyoming's World Match Play Championship, heading to Palm Desert, Calif., to compete for the title with seven other schools.
The second annual event will take place this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11) at the Classic Club, a 7,322-yard, par-72 design. Colorado is the No. 1 seed and thus drew No. 8 South Dakota State for its first round match Friday at 8 a.m. MST. The winner faces the victor of the No. 4-5 match between Wyoming and Seattle University at 12:30 p.m. The final matches are set for 8 a.m. on Saturday.
Colorado is coming off a solid fall season, with four top five finishes in six tournaments, including two runner-up efforts; the other two were a sixth place and a nine place, but the Buffs were always in the top half of every event. CU enters its first competition of the spring ranked No. 46 by GolfStat and No. 63 by Golfweek.
The other competing schools are San Diego (ranked 83rd and 80th, respectively), San Francisco (85th and 68th), Boise State and Wichita State.
Last year, the Buffs finished fifth, defeating Wichita State and Denver in the consolation bracket after falling to Texas-El Paso in the first round. The six participating players combined for a 7-7-3 record in the 18 matches.
Edwards has set the lineup, first through sixth, consisting of five sophomores of one freshman: Dylan McDermott, Justin Biwer, Tucker Clark, Jack Holland, Hunter Swanson (the freshman) and Jack Hughes. They finished the fall in the same order in stroke average: McDermott (69.67), Biwer (70.33), Clark (71.11), Holland (71.93), Swanson (72.06) and Hughes (73.08); Holland appeared in five meets and Hughes four, the other four in all six (18 rounds).
McDermott comes in ranked as the No. 121 player in the nation by Golfweek, With Biwer No. 214 and Clark No. 333; they are three of the top five players in the field along with San Diego's David Rauch (No. 178) and Andi Xu (No. 298).
"The team has been working hard all winter, with everyone playing a lot of outside events and working hard on their games," Colorado head coach Roy Edwards said. "The match play event is the perfect way to get started as one-on-one match play is as intense of golf competition as you can get. We expect to have a great week in California with an amazing lineup of courses for us.
Following the Wyoming event, McDermott will represent the Buffaloes in the second annual Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase, set for Monday, Feb. 13 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., the westside of Los Angeles.
"Dylan has a great shot at Riviera and will be a tremendous representative for us there," Edwards said. "Many thanks to Doug Nock and Steve Shaw for making that happen for us – it is as special and unique of an experience any college golfer can ever have." Nock lettered in golf for the Buffaloes in the 1980s and Shaw is a longtime donor to the program. The trio will be joined in the Pro-Am event by a to be determined PGA Tour player.
NOTES: The Buffaloes played a combined 129 rounds in the fall in setting a team record for low stroke average (71.98) … McDermott set three impressive records in the fall, low average for a fall season (69.67), most consecutive tournaments under par (six and counting) and most consecutive rounds of par or better (13, also current) … Match play results do not figure into the team stats other than won-lost-tied records … Three players participating this year did so in the 2022 event; Holland posted a 2-1 record, McDermont was 1-1-1 and Biwer 0-1-2 … Colorado was 75-22-3 against Division I competition in the fall, a 76.5 winning percentage …CU was 2-0 versus Boise State, 2-2 against Wyoming, 1-1 versus San Diego and San Francisco, all of whom competed here last year.
