Buffaloes Three Strokes Out Of The Lead

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team battled through heavy rain at time as well as gusting winds to end the first round in second place here Wednesday in the Wyoming Cowboy Intercollegiate.

The No. 47 Buffaloes, the highest ranked team competing here, turned in a 1-over 289 team score to trail No. 88 Fresno State by three strokes, as the Bulldogs were the only team under par, posting a 2-under 286.  Utah and host Wyoming are tied for third (290), with Sacramento State rounding out the top five (291).

Colorado battled back over the last two holes, its four scorers for the round scoring five birdies; at one point two-thirds of the way, CU had actually dipped into 11th place, 7-over par and eight back of the lead.

"We got off to a good start, but in the middle of the round we had several mental mistakes on some of our approach shots," head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Uncharacteristic mistakes, like being short-sided with those approaches, which on this course, you're likely going to make a bogey.

"But we really did a nice job finishing off the round – we did so by simply competing while being mentally tough," he added.  "We actually finished on some really hard holes and played some of our best golf, whereas we had a few high scores on the easier holes.  Overall, we saw a lot of really nice shots today and can't wait to get back out there tomorrow to see what we can do.  We're very familiar with this course and the guys know how to attack it."

The Buffs finished second on the same course -- the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club Course – early last month in Wyoming's World Match Play event.

Sophomore Jack Holland led the CU quintet on Wednesday, as he was one of just 11 players here to turn in a subpar round, carding a 2-under 70 that has him tied for fourth in the medalist race.  He had an eagle – his second of the season and the only one in the 89-man field in the first round – three birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys.  He played the four par-5's at 3-under par, tied for the best Wednesday as well.

The eagle came on the 568-yard, par-5 4th hole, as his second shot was just off the green and he chipped in.

Freshman Hunter Swanson carded the next best score for the Buffaloes, an even-par 72, which has him tied for 12th.  One of seven players to match par here on day one, he had three birdies, a team-high 12 pars (19th-most in the field) and three bogeys.

Sophomore Dylan McDermott shot a 1-over 73, as he had three birdies and 11 pars with four bogeys.  While he saw his school record streak of 13 straight subpar rounds come to an end, he sank an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-4 1 18th to prevent posting his high score for the year (in fact, he has just one other 73 in 19 rounds this season).  He enters Thursday's second round tied for 19th.

Sophomore Justin Biwer cranked out a 2-over 74 that his him tied for 28th.  He made the turn after the front nine with a 40, but had all four of his team-best birdies on the back side – with two bogeys – to close with a 34 on the nine.

Sophomore Tucker Clark turned in a 4-over 76 that has him tied for 50th.  Starting the round on No. 2, he was 2-under through the 12th hole before hitting the first of two rough patches where he went double bogey-bogey (on Nos. 13-14 and then on Nos. 18-1).  He did play the par-3's as 2-under, tied for second-best in the first round domain.

Two Buffalo sophomores are competing here individually, Frederik Eisenbeis and Jack Hughes.  Hughes shot a 4-over 76, but did match Biwer and Clark with a team-high four birdies; otherwise he recorded seven pars against six bogeys and a double on the plus side in also being tied for 50th.  Eisenbeis finished round one with a 5-over 77, as he had a birdie and 11 pars also with six bogeys and is tied for 62nd.

Sacramento State's Riley Bell is the individual leader after firing a 5-under 67; that was on the strength of five straight birdies on holes 18 through 4 (he started on No. 6); his only bogey on the round came on his last hole.  He has a two-stroke lead over two others.

The second round is set for Thursday, as the Buffaloes will paired for the second straight day with Fresno State, Utah and Wyoming; they will tee off at 9:10 a.m. MST on the No. 1 tee.  The final 18 will commence Friday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MST.
