Buffs Host Conference Openers

March 14, 2023 | Lacrosse

BOULDER - The Colorado women's lacrosse team opens up conference play against No. 21 Stanford and Cal this weekend at Kittredge Field.

The Buffs (1-4) garnered their first win of the season over Ohio State University (4-5) last weekend. Colorado's 14-10 victory saw five different players score, including junior attacker Zoe McElhaney and first year midfielder Jess Peluso, who both earned their first career goals.

Charlie Rudy, Sam McGee, and Ashley Stokes all notched hat tricks during the win. Rudy put away five goals, McGee had four goals, and Stokes earned three goals. It was Rudy's fourth hat trick of the year out of only five games.

Despite the Buffs having seven less draw controls than the Buckeyes, the team collected 20 ground balls and created eight caused turnovers to keep possession out of the Buckeyes' reach.

Colorado hosts No. 21 Stanford on St. Patrick's Day this Friday at 3 p.m. MT. For the game, the Buffs are partnering with One Love to raise awareness around domestic violence. For Sunday's 12 p.m. MT game against Cal, CU will celebrate 50 years of Title IX and Women's History Month. Players will sign autographs after the game.

The Cardinal

Currently Stanford (3-3) leads the Pac-12 with a 1-0 conference record. However, they're also the only team to have played a conference game so far. The Cardinal defeated Cal 20-8 in their second game of the season.

Stanford has seen 11 different players earn goals so far this season. Sophomore midfielder Annabel Frist leads both the team and the Pac-12 in goals with 23. Rudy is second in the Pac-12 with 18 goals.

The Cardinal narrowly eked out a 21-20 win over Albany last weekend after trailing by seven goals at one point. The last time the two teams met in Boulder, the Buffs walked away with a 17-16 victory.

The Golden Bears

Colorado has defeated Cal (2-5) in 10 consecutive meetings, and the Golden Bears haven't beaten the Buffs since 2015. CU boasts a 5-1 record over the Golden Bears when playing in Boulder.

Cal's leading scorer is Maya Lawliss, a senior midfielder from Portland, Ore., who has 15 goals this season. Quinnlyn Mason and Amanada Morse barely trail Lawliss as each of the seniors have 12 goals a piece.

The Golden Bears are on a one-game losing streak after falling 11-10 to American over the weekend.
