Two Buffaloes In Top 10, Three In Top 20
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team slipped two spots into fourth place here Thursday, after completion of the second round of the Wyoming Cowboy Intercollegiate.
Host Wyoming turned in the best single round team score of the event – a 9-under 279 – to take over the lead with one round remaining. The Cowboys have a 7-under 569 total, which leads Utah (575) by six strokes and first round leader Fresno State (576) by seven.
The No. 47 Buffaloes, the highest ranked team competing here, are by no means out of the hunt for the team title, as CU recorded a second straight 1-over 289 score for a 2-over 578 total. Hawai'i rounds out the top five with a 580 count, before more separation with the 11 other teams.
Sophomore Dylan McDermott fashioned CU's best second round score, a 3-under 69 that has him tied for third overall with a 2-under 142. He had his school record streak of 13 straight subpar rounds come to an end in the first round, but it didn't deter the Buff scoring average leader (69.8) from rebounding quickly. He opened with two pars and then bogeyed No. 3, but came right back with his first eagle of the season on the par-5 4th, driving the green in two and sinking about a 5-foot putt. From there, he scored four birdies, eight more pars against two bogeys for his round on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club Course layout.
Sophomore Justin Biwer bounced back from his high score for the season (only a 2-over 74) with a 2-under 70 to pull even at 144 and stand in a tie for 10th place. He had a team-high six birdies with eight pars opposite four bogeys on his second 18 here, with two of the birds over his last four holes to get to under par for the day.
Sophomore Jack Holland shot a 3-over 75 for a 1-over 145 score after two trips around the Classic Club, which has him in a 19th place tie. He had three birdies and 10 pars against four bogeys and double, the latter of which he opened his round with, but he gathered himself and played the rest of the front at 1-under. He closed his round with a birdie to climb back into the top 20.
Freshman Hunter Swanson also put a 3-over 75 into the books, and he stands tied for 31st with a 3-over 147 total. He had two birdies and 11 pars with five bogeys Thursday.
Sophomore Tucker Clark had his struggles for the second straight day, turning in a 6-over 78 that has him in at 10-over 154 through two rounds, tying him for 63rd. He had a rough start with a bogey and double in his first three holes and went on to score one birdie, 11 pars, five bogeys and that double for his round, which matched his highest of the year.
Two Buffalo sophomores are competing here individually, Frederik Eisenbeis and Jack Hughes. Eisenbeis continued his pattern of improving his second round score for the fifth of five events this season, as he carded an even-par 72 after opening with a 77. His 5-over 149 total has him tied for 41st, as he had consistent round of the three birdies and 12 pars opposite three bogeys.
Hughes had some struggles on Thursday, scoring a 5-over 77 for a 9-over 153 through 36 holes, tying him for 58th. He did have three birdies, but had only seven pars with eight bogeys. He did have five of those bogeys on the front nine and rallied to shoot par on the back side.
"We had good rounds from Dylan and Justin, and Freddy played solid on the individual side," head coach Roy Edwards said. "We kind of labored all day but did a nice of competing in general. But we remain in striking distance in the team race and a couple of guys are in the mix for medalist honors."
Cal State-Fullerton's Harry Doig shot the best score of the day – a six-under 66 – to share the individual lead with Fresno State's Matthew Manganello at 6-under 138; Manganello had the second-best round Thursday with a 67.
The third and final round will be Friday and feature a 9:00 a.m. MST shotgun start; Colorado for the third straight round will be paired with Wyoming, Utah and Fresno State, a fairly rare occurrence.
