Golfers Move Into 11th In Stanford's "The Goodwin"
March 31, 2023 | Men's Golf
McDermott tied for fifth, three back of the lead
SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado men's golf team moved up four spots into 11th place, as the second round of Stanford's "The Goodwin," was completed here Friday.
No. 11 Georgia Tech carded one of the best two single round scores Friday to leapfrog into the lead; after a 10-under 270, the Yellow Jackets own a 36-hole score of 13-under 547. No. 13 Oklahoma remained in second, one back at 548; San Diego turned in the other 270 single round score to move from eighth into third at 6-under 554. First round leader, host and No. 8 Stanford is fourth (556), with No. 66 San Francisco rounding out the top five (558).
Colorado, ranked No. 51, started slow for the second straight round, the five players a combined 8-over through four holes (with the four who would tally the team score at the end of the day 4-over). But the Buffaloes, who had just one birdie and 15 bogeys on the back nine Thursday played those holes much better, with nine birdies and nine bogeys the second time around the course. When the smoke cleared, CU remain tied for 15th place after morning play was completed but moved into 11th with an 8-over 568 total after recording a 1-over 281 for Friday's round which was the 10th-best of the day.
CU is just 10 strokes out of fifth in a 28-team field comprised of 14 top 75 schools and 18 of the top 100.
Sophomore Dylan McDermott put a second round in the 60s into the books on the 6,939-yard, par-70 TPC at Harding Park course, as he fashioned a 1-under 69 and is tied for fifth with a 3-under 137 score. He is just three back the lead in what could be considered his neighborhood, as he hails from Granite Bay, just two hours northeast of San Francisco. He had two birdies and 15 pars and a single bogey Friday and is one of just nine players of the 155 competing here to post two sub-70 scores. He's playing the par-5 holes the fourth-best in the field at 4-under with his 28 pars over two days tied for sixth.
Sophomore Tucker Clark matched par, as he is in with a 1-over 141 score through two rounds that has him tied for 38th. He had two birdies and 14 pars opposite two bogeys Friday, with the birdies coming in a 12-hole stretch where he was 2-under. His 27 pars overall are tied for eighth in the field.
Sophomore Justin Biwer was one of the biggest movers of the day, as he also shot an even-par 70 that has him tied for 65th with a 4-over 144 total; he jumped 33 spots in the standings. He had a team-high five birdies to go with nine pars against three bogeys and a double.
Freshman Hunter Swanson carded a 5-over 75, tying him for 121st; his second round was very similar to his first, with two birdies and 10 pars but against five bogeys and a double. After a rough start that saw him stand at 4-over through five holes, he was 2-under over his next eight before closing with three of his bogeys over the last five.
Sophomore Jack Holland rebounded strong from an opening round 80 with a 2-over 72; he's in at 12-over 152 that has him tied for 144th. He played his last 10 holes Friday at 1-under par, making all three of his birdies on the day in that span; he otherwise had 11 pars, three bogeys and a double.
"I'm really proud of the job the guys did today," head coach Roy Edwards said. "We didn't get off to a very good start, but this team does a tremendous job of hanging in rounds. It's been very impressive. Jack played his last 10 holes at 1-under par, which was a great comeback from his first round. Dylan is in a great spot, Tucker was solid – and Justin closed out his round in a flourish. Hunter is close and we expect he will play well tomorrow.'
Washington's Bo Peng and Oklahoma's Ben Lorenz are tied for the individual lead through two rounds, both in with 6-under par 134 scores. Twenty-four players in all are under par with another 13 who are even.
The third and final round is Saturday, with the Buffaloes paired with BYU, Cal Poly and Washington State and teeing off from 2:05-2:53 p.m. (MST) off the No. 10 tee. They will be the last group that will tee off in the final round.
NOTES: CU was also the last to tee off in the first round … Colorado continued to avoid big numbers for the most part, as the Buffaloes have just three double bogeys worse than bogey; that's the sixth-fewest through two rounds (Georgia Tech has zero, San Diego one, and USC, SMU and San Francisco two apiece). CU played with Cal, SMU and San Diego in both rounds, and the group by far had the fewest holes worse than bogey with nine total … McDermott now has 13 rounds in the 60s this season and 21 for his career (both CU team-bests); the CU single-season mark is 18, set by Jeremy Paul during the 2015-16 campaign … The average score for the 310 rounds through Friday is 72.29; it was nearly a stroke lower for the second round (71.90) than the first (72.68) … Colorado is playing the par-3s at 13-over (tied for 20th in the field), the par-4s at 19-over (13th) and the par-5s at 9under (tied for 10th) … The Buffs still have one of just nine eagles (by McDermott on Thursday), and are tied for 22nd in birdies (21, San Francisco has 40) and the eighth-most pars (115; Cal leads with 134).
