Buffs Finish 11th At Pac-12 Championship

April 19, 2023 | Women's Golf

PHOENIX — The University of Colorado closed out the 2022-23 season with an 11th place finish at the Pac-12 Conference Women's Golf Championship, Wednesday, at the Papago Golf Club.

The Buffaloes shot their highest of three rounds, carding 14-over-par on Wednesday to finish the championship at 33-over, 897.

No. 14 USC ran away with the team title at 15-under, 849, seven strokes better than No. 9 Oregon. Top-ranked Stanford was third at 7-under. No. 29 Arizona, which was tied with USC for the lead after two rounds, fell back to fourth at 1-over, after a 9-over final round.

Freshman Morgan Miller was Colorado's top golfer both in the third round and overall for the tournament. Miller shot 1-over on the day to finish tied for 25th at 3-over, 219, as she secured the Buffaloes' low 54-hole score for the third time this season.

Miller had an early bogey at the 158-yard, par 3, No. 11, but got it back two holes later on the 347-yard, par 4, No. 13. She was 1-over at the turn to the front nine and dropped to 3-over with back-to-back bogeys at the par 3, No. 4 and par 4, No 5. She gained those strokes back over the final four holes with birdies at No. 6 and on her final hole, the 512-yard, par 5, No. 9.

Sophomore Natalie Vo finished tied for 36th overall at 10-over, 226. Vo was Colorado's second-best golfer for the championship despite having the team's high round of the day at 7-over, 79. It's just the third time in 30 starts this season that her round didn't count toward the team score.

Vo had a rough start playing her first five holes at 7-over. She rebounded to play even the rest of the way, highlighted by back-to-back birdies on a pair of par 4s at No. 6 and No. 7.

Haylin Harris shot 77 in the final round to tie for 39th overall at 11-over, 227. The graduate transfer shot 4-over on her first nine and picked up two strokes with birdies on Papago's longest hole, the 532-yard, par 5, No. 1 and then on the 161-yard, par 3, No. 4. She fell back to 5-over on the next two holes before finishing her round with three straight pars.

Senior Issy Simpson finished tied for 42nd overall at 12-over, 228. She shot 4-over, 76, in the final round and had Colorado's best round for a large portion day before some struggles at the end. After a bogey to start at No. 10, she had a pair of birdies over the next four holes to get to 1-under.

Simpson was still at 1-under through 10 holes, and even through 14, but dropped four strokes between No. 6 and No. 8 before making par on her final hole at No. 9 to close out her round of 76. She had a team-best five birdies in the third round after making only two in the first two rounds combined.

Graduate-senior Malak Bouraeda finished tied for 51st overall at 19-over, 235. Playing in just her sixth round of the season, Bouraeda had her best round of the championship on Wednesday at 4-over, 76, playing both sides at 2-over.

All three of Colorado's seniors – Bouraeda, Simpson and Harris – made par on their final collegiate hole on No. 9.

"We just couldn't get anything going this week," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "We are all disappointed with the finish. We expect more out of ourselves."

Stanford's Rose Zhang ran away with the individual title at 12-under, 204, setting tournament records for low 54-hole score and margin of victory. Arizona State's Beth Coulter was second, seven strokes back at 5-under.
