McDermott In Ninth Place, Seven Out of Lead
PROVO, Utah — The University of Colorado men's golf team didn't produce many high numbers but didn't counter with many low ones here Friday as the Buffaloes find themselves in 12th place after two rounds of 58th annual Brigham Young's PING-Cougar Classic.
No. 44 and host Brigham Young is running away with its event, as the Cougars own a 33-under par team score of 543. BYU was so dominant Friday that all five of its designated scorers and three others playing individually all are in the top 14 on the individual standings.
Utah Valley, which actually led BYU by two strokes after Friday's morning round, is in a distant second with a 15-under 561 score, while Wyoming holds third (9-under 567). CSU-Northridge (568) and Hawai'i (569) round out the top five.
Colorado, ranked No. 56, got off to a slow start and never really caught fire, hovering around even-par all day; the Buffaloes were in 13th place after a 1-over 289 the first time around the 7,142-yard, par-72 Riverside Country Club course configuration, and an afternoon even-par 288 moved CU up a notch into 12th with a 1-over 577 for the 36-hole day. The five designated scorers for the Buffaloes recorded 28 birdies and 117 pars opposite 34 bogeys and just one double.
Sophomore Dylan McDermott paced the Buffaloes on Friday, posting a 68-70—138 scorecard, the 6-under par effort tying him for ninth place. He had a very steady day, with nine birdies, 24 pars and just three bogeys; he ended both rounds strong, with two birdies in his final six holes in the morning and four in his five seven in the afternoon. He played the par-4 holes at 2-under, 12th-best in the 92-man field, and is also tied for eighth in birdies overall.
Sophomore Tucker Clark is tied for 51st with a 2-over 146 after back-to-back 73s Friday. He had identical rounds with three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys for six, 22 and eight, respectively on the day to stand tied for 51st. He parred seven of the same holes in each round while birdying No. 13 and bogeying No. 11 twice each.
Freshman Hunter Swanson matched Clark with a pair of 73's and the 2-over 146 scorecard and almost posted similar breakdown numbers, as he had six birdies and 23 pars with six bogeys and double. The latter came on his second hole in the afternoon (the par-4 2nd), but he was 1-under the remainder of the day.
Sophomore Justin Biwer opened the day with a 3-over 75, his high score of the season, but rebounded with an even-par 72 the second time around Riverdale to have him with a 3-over 147 (tied for 58th) heading into Saturday's final round. He had four birdies and 25 pars to go against seven bogeys Friday; the 75 was just this third score higher than a 74 out of 63 career rounds.
Sophomore Jack Holland fashioned a 76-75—151 scorecard (7-over par), which has him tied for 75th. He had three birdies and 23 pars with 10 bogeys Friday. Five of those bogeys came in an eight-hole stretch in the first round, with two in his final three holes in round two.
Sophomore Jack Hughes is competing here as an individual; his score doesn't count in CU's team total. He is tied for 82nd with a 73-79—152 scorecard, as he had five birdies and 19 pars against 11 bogeys and a double.
'Dylan played well, and he did a great job despite fighting a back injury," head coach Roy Edwards said. "Everything else was challenging. Tomorrow, we expect a focused group that can move up the board."
Boise State's Max Charles, thanks to a second round 9-under 63, owns a four stroke lead over two pursuers with a 13-under 131 score.
The third and final round will commence Saturday, with the Buffaloes paired with St. Mary's and will start play on the No. 1 tee between 9:20 and 9:40 a.m. (MDT).
NOTES: The temperature was a crisp 43 degrees at the 9:30 a.m. shotgun start, but "warmed" to 50 about two hours in; rain started to fall midway through the second round, and with the winds picking up and the temperature dropping, the wind chill factor by the end of the day was in the upper 30s … The average score for the 184 rounds Friday was 72.55; it was 71.54 for the morning round and 73.55 for the afternoon loops … On Friday, Colorado played the par-3s at 10-over (14th in the field), the par-4s at 11-over (12th) and the par-5s at 13-under (5th) … The Buffs are 14th in birdies (28, host BYU had 47) but the second-most pars (117; Wyoming has the most, 125) … McDermott increased his team-high best to 15 rounds in the 60s this season and to 23 for his career; the CU single-season mark is 18, set by Jeremy Paul during the 2015-16 campaign; McDermott also has 19 subpar rounds in '22-23 after two on Friday, passing three players with now the fourth-most in a single CU season.
