Colorado Closes the Weekend Strong at Fum McGraw Power Meet

Matt Ward sets another school record in the hammer throw

FORT COLLINS - The Colorado Buffaloes traveled to Fort Collins to compete at Sunday's Fum McGraw Power Meet. CU left the meet with a new school record and a handful of new top-10 marks.

For the second time this weekend and the third time this season, Matt Ward broke his own school record in the men's hammer with a winning throw of 66.33m (217-07). He previously set the school record with throws of 213-8 and his most recent mark of 213-10. Ward remains in the top 20 performers in the NCAA West region and moves into the top 35 in the nation.

Tyler Sconce also competed in the event, placing second with a throw of 59.13m (194-00). Lars Atkinson, Isaiah Bouchard and Ames Newman went 4, 5, and 6 for the Buffs in the event. 
 
Ward and Atkinson also returned as CU's top two throwers in the discus. Ward closed the event in second with a top mark of 53.76m (176-04). Atkinson placed third with a personal-best toss of 51.65m (169-05).
 
Amanda Opp set a new personal best in the women's hammer, taking first place with a throw of 59.99m (196-10). She is now tied for second-best in CU history. Jane Powers placed third in the event, throwing 54.61m (179-02), while Isabella Braun threw a new personal best of 53.95m (177-00) to place fourth. Braun has now moved to the eighth-best mark in CU history, improving on her previous-best mark of 174-4.
 
Abbey Glynn picked up her second 400-meter hurdles win of the season. She bested the field with a season-best time of 57.85. 
 
Emma Pollak and Grace Jenkins took the top two spots in the women's 400-meters. Pollak won the event with a time of 55.72, while Jenkins was right on her heels with a time of 57.31. The Buffs also occupied the top two spots in the women's high jump. Routledge cleared 1.72m (5-07.75), while McMullen cleared 1.62m (5-03.75). 
 
McMullen also competed in the women's 200-meters, clocking a 24.29 to finish second. Jaida Drame closely followed, placing third with a time of 24.50.
 
Lauren Whyrick added her name to CU's top 10 list in the women's shot put. She finished fourth on the day with a heave of 14.35m (47-01). Meghan Whyrick's top mark for the day was good for sixth in the event (12.95m./42-06).
 
Nicholas Bianco took home the meet's men's pole vault title. He was the only competitor to clear the bar at 4.72m (15-05.75), doing so in his first attempt.
 
Jada Green secured her second women's javelin win of the season, beating the field by almost 21 feet. She put up a mark of 46.18m (153-06) in her fifth attempt, while the second-place finisher topped out at 39.71m (130-03).
 
The Colorado track & field program will be back in action next weekend at the Doug Max Invitational as well as the Desert Heat Invitational.
