The CU thrower is just the second Buff to win the award

SAN FRANCISCO—Colorado thrower Matt Ward picked up his first Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor the conference announced on Tuesday.

The honor is the first for a CU male field athlete since Alexandre Kizirian (Apr. 29, 2014) and marks just the second-ever weekly award for a CU male field athlete since joining the conference in 2011-12.

Ward, a mid-semester transfer from Montana, has set the school record in the hammer throw three times this season, including twice last weekend. He opened the weekend with a winning throw of 65.17m (213-10) at the Mines Mini Meet, breaking his previous record of 65.13m (213-8) that was set on Apr. 8. He bested his mark at the Fum McGraw Power Meet in Fort Collins, heaving a top mark of 66.33m (217-7).

The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, native, ranks seventh in the Pac-12 in the hammer and 18th in the NCAA West Region.

Ward also competed in the discus in Fort Collins on Sunday. He took second place in the event with a distance of 53.76m (176-4).

Colorado will be back in action this weekend at the Doug Max Invitational hosted by Colorado State (Apr. 28-29) and the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. (Apr. 29).
