Buffs Win First Pac-12 Tournament Match in Program History Over Oregon

April 26, 2023 | Tennis

Buffs defeat Oregon 4-2 to move on to the quarterfinals.

OJAI, Calif. – April 26 is a day that will go down in the record books. The Colorado Buffaloes Tennis team got the programs first Pac-12 tournament victory here Wednesday at the Weil Tennis Academy defeating seventh seeded Oregon 4-2.

One of the Head Coach Anthony Pham's biggest points of emphasis going into the Pac-12 tournament was improving in doubles, and that is exactly what the Buffs did today.  The Buffs came out strong and took the doubles point for the first time since March 5 against Northern Arizona.

"We made some huge adjustments in doubles today," Pham said. "Being able to get that doubles point was huge for us."

Just as the team had an emphasis for starting fast in doubles, the Buffs wanted to make sure to keep that going in singles and nobody took that to heart more than freshman Carri Hayes, who responded with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

"Carri did a nice job of taking care of business," Pham said. "We have a lot of confidence in her and it's great to see her making strides and playing within herself."

After winning the first Pac-12 Tournament match in program history head coach Anthony Pham knows this team has done the work and now is enjoying the fruits of their labor.

"We've got an extremely resilient group who genuinely love one another," Pham said. "It's really gratifying to see them enjoy the fruits of their labor. This group does the work and as a result, continues to move the program forward in a very positive and meaningful manner. They always compete hard and represent the Buffs the right way."

As much as the team will enjoy the victory, they are back at it Thursday against second-seeded California.

"I am very proud of the effort the team put forth today. It was a complete team effort from all eight Buffs today. We will enjoy this for a very short time and then we have to turn our attention to a very good California team tomorrow."

How it Happened
  • The afternoon started slowly with Oregon getting the first win at No. 3 doubles 6-2 from Jo-Yee Chan and Madisen Olsen over Ellen Puzak and Betina Tokac.
  • The Buffs would battle back in doubles and take the momentum starting with a 6-3 victory from Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed at No. 1 doubles over the No. 79 doubles duo Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral.
  • Minutes later Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura clinched the doubles point against Myah Petchey and Karin Young at No. 2 doubles 7-5 to give the Buffs a 1-0 lead going into singles.
  • Colorado would waste no time in singles action to extend the lead. Carri Hayes dominated at No. 6 singles winning 6-0, 6-0 against Madisen Olsen to give the Buffs a 2-0 lead.
  • The Ducks would begin to fight back at No. 3 singles behind a 6-4, 6-3 victory from Uxia Martinez Moral over Mila Stanojevic.
  • Oregon would then tie the match up after a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles from Sophie Luescher over Antonia Balzert.
  • Aya El Sayed would retake the lead for Colorado at No. 4 singles. El Sayed won her 12th straight match 6-4, 6-4 over Karin Young to give the Buffs a 3-2 lead with two matches remaining.
  • At No. 2 singles Elys Ventura would prove to put the Buffs over the top.  After splitting a back and forth first two sets, Ventura would jump out to a fast start in the third set and lead 3-0 against Oregon's Myah Petchey. For the Ducks Petchey would be forced to retire due to injury giving Ventura the win, and clinching the match for the Buffs.
  • At No. 5 singles between Betina Tokac and Jo-Yee Chan were in a battle after splitting the first two sets, each winning their match 6-4. In the third set Tokac was beginning to come back after being down 5-2 to bring the last set to 5-4 before the match was clinched leaving the third set unfinished.
