Sherrod Back for Fifth Season

The Colorado guard will finish her collegiate career in 2023-24
BOULDER — Colorado guard Jaylyn Sherrod announced that she will be returning to the Buffaloes for her fifth and final season on Saturday.
Sherrod put the announcement out on her Instagram featuring a graphic that simply stated, "Buffs Nation, I'm Back."

The Birmingham, Ala., native, has been crucial to Colorado's return to the national spotlight. She has helped lead the Buffs to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments and she hit two layups and scored the final four points of regulation, in the last 91 seconds to force overtime in CU's second-round win over Duke. Â
"Jaylyn came to Colorado four years ago with a goal and a vision to help elevate the program to a place where we could compete for a championship," head coach JR Payne commented. "She believed in us as much as we believed in her and that trust has created something very special. Ultimately, Jay embodies everything we are about—toughness, grit, loyalty and a desire to be excellent in everything she does. We are beyond excited for next season."
This past season, an All-Conference and All-Defensive honoree, Sherrod led the team in assists per game (5.1). Her assist total (167) finished tied for fourth-best in CU history with Bridget Turner in 1985-86. Sherrod finished the season with 78 steals, the ninth-best in CU history. Sherrod and Kindyll Wetta (112) combined for one of the best backcourts in CU history, becoming the first duo to each have 100 assists in a season since 1999-2000 when Mandy Nightingale (124) and Jenny Rouler (112) accomplished the feat.
Sherrod averaged a career-high 11.3 points per game and finished with 373 total points this season. She matched her career-high with 27 points in CU's 71-68 win over Washington State. Sherrod passed 1,000 career points with a 13-point performance against WSU in the Pac-12 Tournament.
Sherrod averaged 12.7 points and tied Nightingale for the most assists by a Buff in the NCAA Tournament with 18 in CU's three games. Her 6.0 assists per game are good for the third most by a CU player in a single tournament.
Sherrod has led CU in scoring 16 times in her four seasons. She has led the team 75 times in assists and 34 times in steals. She has three career games with 10 or more assists and has twice finished with nine assists. Â
She currently sits sixth in CU history with 473 career assists.
Sherrod burst on the scene in Boulder in her freshman season. She handed out a career-high 11 assists in her first game. It was tied for the most assists in a CU debut and continues to be tied for the 10th most by a Buff. She closed her rookie season with 152 assists, which is now the 10th-best mark in a season.
The Buffs will return four out of five starters next season, with Tayanna Jones slated as the lone departure from the core of the team. Sherrod, Quay Miller, Frida Formann and Aaronette Vonleh accounted for 68.7% of CU's scoring last season.
The NCAA granted student-athletes who competed in the 2020-21 season an additional year of eligibility due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
