East Campus Groundbreaking A Success
April 24, 2023 | General
BOULDER – An East Campus Groundbreaking for athletic facilities improvements at Prentup Field, The CU Ski Building and Potts Field took place on April 23.
The $12.3 million upgrade includes improvement for nine of CU's 17 varsity sports.
Prentup Field, home of the CU soccer team, will have lights installed for the first time, a new pitch, team dugouts and ad boards. Renovations will be completed ahead of the 2023 season, which will see the program's first home night match on August 17 against Northern Colorado.
Potts Field will have a new track and all new equipment related to all field events including a throwing cage, pole vault pit and sand pits. Improvements will be ready before next season when the Buffs host the 2024 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships.
Additionally for both facilities, a new building housing restrooms and permanent concession stands will be constructed and that building will also include a new training center for the CU Ski Team, housing its new Nordic treadmill purchased last August.
The east campus athletic facilities were originally constructed in 1967 after renovations to Folsom Field removed the track and lowered the field to add 15 more rows of seats. Track & Field moved to Potts Field for the 1968 season and Prentup Field became the home of the CU baseball team at that time.
Potts Field was renamed after legendary coach Frank Potts in 1984 and this will be the third renovation of the facility with the most recent coming in 2003.
The 2024 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships will be the fourth conference championship meet the facility has hosted, also hosting the 1986 and 1993 Big Eight Championships and the 2008 Big 12 Championships, when the men's team won the conference championship.
Prentup Field was originally known as Varsity Field and renamed for Frank Prentup in 1978. After baseball was discontinued at CU in 1980, the field remained a baseball facility until the early 2000s. Soccer began as a varsity sport at CU in 1996 and played its first few seasons at Pleasantview Soccer complex in North Boulder and was granted exclusive use of Prentup in 2003 and began playing games in the 2004 season.
Much like Northern Colorado will be the first game under the lights at Prentup this August, back in the fall of 2004, the Buffs beat the Bears 3-0 in the first soccer match at the facility on Oct. 1, 2004. Improvements to the facility have been ongoing since that time.
The Ski Building on East Campus has been home to the ski team since 1983 and several improvements have been made over the years. In 2014, the building was named in memory of Bryan Sax, a former ski team member who passed away in a plane crash in 2008. At that time, a lockerroom was built and a trophy wall constructed.
Last year, improvements were made to include a team video viewing area and new fueling station was built.
