Colorado Closes out Weekend
September 24, 2023 | Tennis
SAN DIEGO, and SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – In the final day of the first weekend this fall at the Battle in the Bay and UTSA Intercollegiate Championships the Colorado Buffaloes Tennis team finished the trip with seven exhibition matches.
Throughout the weekend the goal was to improve and get match experience, and that is exactly what happened. On the fourth and final day across both tournaments the Buffs had seven total matches played as exhibitions. Even though as a team the record for today was only 2-5 there was growth from day one.
That was evident from the first match of the day down in San Diego. Pia Rebec and Elys Ventura got the action started in doubles against Mckenna Koenig and Parker Fry from USC. Throughout the entire match it was a back-and-forth affair, but at the end Rebec and Ventura closed it out in the final set to win 7-5. This match was the not only the first win as a doubles pairing but the first win in Rebecs young career as a Buff.
Similarly in San Francisco play began with doubles where Aya El Sayed and Mila Stanojevic battled against TCU's Destinee Martins and Isabel Pascual. Unlike the first match of the day, they were unable to come away with the win, losing 6-3.
The weekend would finish with five exhibition singles matches between both tournaments. Â It started with Carri Hayes taking on Kristina Novak from Oklahoma State. She continued to show improvement but ultimately still lost the match 6-3, 6-2. Rebec returned to the court for the last time this weekend against Irena Muradyan from San Jose State. She was unable to keep the momentum from her doubles win losing 6-2, 6-1.
The final match of the in San Diego was from Ventura in a tight two set match against a familiar opponent Parker Fry from USC. In both sets it came down to a tiebreaker, but Ventura was unable to close out sets, falling 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6).
Back up the coast El Sayed was facing off against Misaki Kobayashi from Fresno State. She left no doubt dominating from start to finish, closing the trip out with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Stanojevic in the true final match fell in yet another tight straight set match 7-6 (2), 7-5 to San Francisco's own Simran Chhabra.
"Playing in both of these high-level events allowed us to compete against some very strong competition," head coach Anthony Pham commented on the weekend. "We saw some positive things and learned a great deal about our squad. We look forward to making some adjustments in practice in the coming days to help further prepare us for upcoming competition. We have a team of workers and we know we will continue to get better and better." Â
The Buffs return home next week to compete in the Colorado State Invite in Fort Collins.Â
