Buffs Look for the Sweep on Sunday

September 30, 2023 | Soccer

Colorado takes on Oregon State at 2 p.m. MT

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Colorado soccer will look to sweep its final Pac-12 trip through Oregon. The Buffaloes opened the weekend up with a 3-1 win at Oregon and have a meeting with Oregon State on Sunday.

Colorado (9-2-0, 1-1-0 Pac-12) put together a solid second half to put away the Ducks in Eugene on Thursday night. Shyra James opened the night with her ninth goal of the season and Ally Clark and Emerson Layne scored within 61 seconds of each other in the second half to secure the team's first Pac-12 win.

The Buffs put 10 shots on net against the Ducks, marking the most on-target in a Pac-12 contest since the 2021 season. CU had 22 shots and outshot Oregon by 12 on the night. Colorado now has five games this season with 20 shots or more.

"We need to build off our momentum from the second half on Thursday," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "I thought we played well in the second half and had some really good moments. Oregon State presents a whole new challenge. They had a good result on Thursday against a very strong Utah team. They [OSU] has one of the top strikers in the league in McKenna Martinez so we'll have to deal with her. We're going to have to be opportunistic going forward. It's another challenge on the road, but we're excited to get after it tomorrow."

Clark's game-winning goal came off a free-kick in the 62nd minute, marking the third of the year scored from a free-kick opportunity for the Buffs. CU now has scored 11 of its 23 goals this season off of set pieces. Layne became the team's 12th different goal scorer this season.

"It was good to get three goals from three different players [against Oregon]," Sanchez continued. "We're going to need that kind of contribution from everybody going forward. We can't be predictable in what we're doing. Like I told the team, goals come in various ways and it doesn't matter how you get them as long as you get them. We had a good second half on Thursday and we need to be even better tomorrow."

Oregon State (3-3-4, 0-1-1 Pac-12) is in search of its first conference win, coming off a 2-2 draw against Utah on Thursday. Utah scored two late second-half goals to take a 2-1 lead, but Martinez put away the equalizer in the 82nd minute to earn the draw. Martinez is fifth in the country in shots per game (5.00) and 11th in the NCAA in shots on goal per game (2.20) and has scored four of OSU's 10 goals this season.

Sunday's kickoff is set for 2 p.m. MT. The match will be streamed online at CUBuffs.com/WatchSoc.
