Colorado finish day one going a combined 6-3 in doubles and singles.
LAS CRUCES, NM – After three weeks off from competition the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team won six matches on day one of the ITA Mountain Region Championship Thursday at the NMSU Tennis Center.
With five of the Buffs not competing on day one of the ITA Mountain Region Championship with a bye in the first round of doubles and waiting for the main draw in singles, it was some different and younger Buffs who took center stage to open action up.Â
Starting with doubles one duo who saw success last season got the first win of the day in Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson. The pair in their first match together this season picked up right where they left off with an 8-5 win over Northern Arizona's Andrea Noguera and Leontina Stojanovic. The win improves their record together to 12-6.
The other pairing of Lera Alexin and Willow Gretsch in their second tournament together defeated Paloma Hennicaux and Wendy Zhang from UTSA 8-7 (1).
As the action switched to singles each of the Buffs had to win two matches to advance to the main draw on tomorrow, and two Buffs accomplished that in Alexin and Bubalo.
Starting with Alexin, she came back in her first match after dropping the first set 6-3 to NAU's Stojanovic before dominating the rest of the match 6-2, 6-1 to move on. Her second match followed a similar formula, Sue Yan Tan from BYU took the first set 6-2 followed by Alexin winning the next two sets 6-3, 7-5 to clinch a spot in the main draw.
On the other side Bubalo took care of Montana State's Angel Bean in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. She ended the day for the Buffs by cruising into the main draw with another straight set win 6-0, 6-1 over Ruby Young from Wyoming.
Gretch and Nelson finished the day a combined 0-3 and will look to bounce back on day two.

The Buffs will return for Day two of the ITA Mountain Region Championships. After receiving byes in both doubles and singles Aya El Sayed, Mila Stanojevic, Betina Tokac, and Rixt van der Werff will take the courts for the first time as well as all that competed today.
