Buffs Handle Sagehens as Opener Approaches
October 19, 2024 | Men's Basketball
BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes men's basketball team secured a 95-62 victory over Pomona-Pitzer at the CU Events Center on Saturday in its first and only exhibition of the 2024-25 campaign.
"It was a good win, good to get the uniform on and play against somebody different," head coach Tad Boyle said. "These guys have been beating each other up for the last 17 practices so I know they were excited about it, and I was excited too."
The Buffs look very different than they did a season ago, returning none of their starting five from last year's squad. That said, Colorado added several talented players in the offseason and they showcased those abilities in the win.
Transfers Elijah Malone (Grace College) and Trevor Baskin (Colorado Mesa) had solid performances, combining for 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. Baskin came off the bench and had six rebounds, four assists and two steals to complement his 11 points.
Freshman forward Sebastian Rancik also played well with 12 points, five rebounds and two assists in his first collegiate action.
"I feel great," stated Rancik. "I had a great time and it just made me even more excited for the season to come. I just have to keep plugging along each day, learning from the coaches and listening, and I'm just excited for the season to come."
On top of Colorado's additions, the Buffs returned key players Julian Hammond III and Bangot Dak. Both players will look to fill the roles of KJ Simpson and Tristan da Silva after they were selected in the NBA Draft this summer.
Hammond notched eight points and five assists along with two steals and four boards. Dak scored 16 while adding five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 21 minutes played.
"I feel like just watching him, our game translates," Dak said of da Silva. "I just try to take in things he's done. From the way he's scored and defended, I feel like he's pretty underrated. He's just helped me a lot by watching him and leading by example."
Within the first three minutes of the game, four different starters for the Buffs showed up in the scoring column to get the offense going. Once it got going it didn't stop as Colorado put up its most points in an exhibition game since scoring 109 vs. Tsinghua University (China) in 2019.
The Buffs outshot the Sagehens 58.5% to 38.6% from the field and outrebounded them 44 to 20. Pomona-Pitzer couldn't keep up with Colorado's pace of play as the Buffs scored 13 more points in transition and 13 more points off turnovers.
The Colorado men's basketball team officially opens the 2024-25 season at home against Eastern Washington on Monday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. MT. The game will also be streamed on ESPN+.
