Stanojevic and Van der Werff Advance to Regional Semifinals
October 20, 2024 | Tennis
LAS CRUCES, NM – Mila Stanojevic and Rixt van der Werff each won their singles match to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Mountain Region Championship Sunday at the NMSU Tennis Center.
After a rain delayed day two in New Mexico the Buffs retook the courts with three in the quarterfinals in Stanojevic, Betina Tokac, and Van der Werff. Colorado was the only team in the tournament to have three players make the quarterfinals.
For Stanojevic advancing to the semifinals would be no easy task taking on Utah's Sara Akid who would confidently take the first set 6-2. After regrouping Stanojevic rattled off two set wins 6-4, 6-3 to clinch a spot in the semifinals.
On the other side of the bracket, Van der Werff faced off against another seeded opponent this time No. 6 Amahee Charrier, from Nevada. Just like the first two seeded opponents and all three she has faced so far, they went down in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. This marked the first time all tournament an opponent had won four games in a set.Â
For Tokac, she had to wait through the day for her opponent from Denver Andrea Beltran to play matches that were moved due to the weather delay yesterday. After both a doubles and a singles bout came time for the quarterfinal match against Tokac. After cruising through the first three matches of the tournament winning all in straight sets Beltran took control early and never let go winning 6-3, 6-2.Â
In doubles, Anya Nelson and Ema Bubalo had to wait another day to play in the quarterfinals against BYU's Yujia Huang and Kendall Kovick.Â
Bubalo got action in singles defeating New Mexico State's Whitney Moon 6-4, 6-2 in an extra match. Colorado played three other extra matches in singles and one in doubles but struggled to find their footing, falling in all four.
UP NEXT
The ITA Mountain Region Championship is starting to wind down, but the action for the Buffs is just getting started. Bubalo and Nelson will look to continue making their way through the bracket starting in the quarterfinals. With a win they will play in the semifinals later in the day.
For Stanojevic she will take on Boise State's Zdena Safarova for a chance to go to the finals. Zdena is coming off a 6-2, 6-3 straight set win in the quarterfinals. This will be the first time facing off against each other.
On the other side of the bracket Van der Werff will look across the net against a familiar opponent in Denver's Beltran who knocked off Tokac earlier today. Van der Werff will look to clinch a spot in the finals in her first full tournament of her career.
Making the singles final at the ITA Mountain Regional Championship, earns an automatic qualifying bid at the NCAA Individual Championships in November. For doubles the winning pair will earn an automatic bid.
