Buffs Finish Strong At Stanford

October 20, 2024 | Women's Golf

STANFORD, Calif. — Another Sunday, another strong performance by the Colorado women's golf team.

For the second-straight tournament the Buffaloes made a giant leap on the final day of competition, this time using a 1-over-par round against a loaded field to finish tied for eighth at the Stanford Intercollegiate which wrapped up Sunday at the Stanford Golf Course.

Colorado finished the 54-hole event at 21-over 873, vaulting up six spots during Sunday's final round. The Stanford Intercollegiate featured 12 of the top 50 teams in the nation with the Buffaloes eventually topping four of those squads and matching No. 41 UC Davis.

No. 3 Stanford and No. 14 USC tied atop the leaderboard at 18-under with the host Cardinal taking the team title on a tiebreaker. No. 7 Texas was third at 11-under and the only other team to finish in the red. Colorado's round of 1-over 285 on the par 71 course was the fourth lowest on the day and the best outside of the top three.

Two weeks ago, the Buffaloes had their best round of the season to leap four spots in the final standings of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at Highlands Ranch. The parallel between the two tournaments was a considerable improvement each day. Colorado went 3-over, 3-under, 7-under over three rounds at Ron Moore. The Buffaloes' progression at Stanford was 13-over, 7-over, 1-over.

"This team does a really good job of getting feedback, taking it seriously and then making big leaps from day to day," Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren said. "We just have to learn how to capitalize on that earlier and get that momentum started before the last day. But it's good for them to see they can play on these challenging courses with these good fields; it's a great thing for them to see they are capable of competing."

No one showed that more on Sunday than sophomore Carolyn Fuller who shaved off 10 strokes from her second round with a 1-under 70 on Sunday. After starting with six-straight pars, she fell to 1-over with a bogey on the par-3 third but played mistake free after that. Fuller gained back two strokes with birdies at the seventh and 13th and in the process jumped 22 spots in the final standings, tying for 68th overall at 13-over.

"That was a really big bounce back by Carolyn," Landegren said. "Coming off an 80, you can either sulk or do something about it, and she did something about it. A different player today, was very proud of her. She had complete trust in herself and her capabilities."

Freshman Sydney Givens had Colorado's low 54-hole score for the second straight tournament finishing in a tie for 14th at 1-under 212 following a 69 in the final round. Her day started a little slow, sitting at 2-over through six holes, but consecutive birdies at the par-4 second and par-3 third swung the momentum as she finished with five birdies over her final 12 holes.

Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch tied for 26th overall at 2-over 215, shooting a 74 in the final round. Junior Morgan Miller tied for 51st at 9-over following a round of 72 on Sunday. Sophomore Vanessa Ngo tied for 78th at 17-over, shooting a 76 in the final round.

USC's Jasmine Koo took medalist honors at 11-under, one shot better than her teammate Catherine Park.

Colorado will wrap up the fall portion of its season at the Nanea Invitational, Oct. 28-30, at the Nanea Golf Club in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i.
