Buffs Fall at Home to Horned Frogs
October 05, 2024 | Soccer
Colorado’s unbeaten streak comes to a close
BOULDER — No. 14 Colorado started fast on Saturday, but No. 23 TCU responded with six unanswered goals, bringing the Buffaloes' 10-game unbeaten streak to a halt. '
Emerson Layne excited the home crowd early, finding the net in the game's second minute. The CU lead lasted 1:39 with TCU getting back to even at the 3:07 mark of the opening half.
TCU (9-2-2, 4-0-2 Big 12) added more goals in the first 25 minutes, with three coming from Seven Castain. Castain finished the day with four goals and an assist for the Horned Frogs.
"Like I just told the team, I don't think myself and the coaching staff prepared well enough for this game," head coach Danny Sanchez stated in the postgame. "We knew TCU was a quality team. We got the early goal, and we just didn't build any momentum off it."
The loss was Colorado's first since Aug. 18 against North Carolina. The Buffs drop to 10-2-1 and 4-1-1 in the Big 12.
"At the end of the day, it's one game," Sanchez continued. "We had a long unbeaten streak. This only counts for one game. Now, it's about turning our attention to Texas Tech on Thursday.
How it Happened
Layne's goal was the earlier the Buffs have gotten on the board this season, jumping to a 1-0 lead just 1:28 into the action.
"We hadn't scored early all year," Sanchez expressed. "It was great to get that, but like I said, we didn't follow up with momentum. We gave them two goals in the next four minutes. I think we hung our heads and it was still a game with 85 minutes left. I told the team at halftime those were the moments you have to get through. You look at the second half; both teams subbed a lot, but the second half was even better. We gave them one goal on the counterattack, but we didn't create enough on the other end."
Less than two minutes later TCU's AJ Hennessey got the Horned Frogs back to even, beating Jordan Nytes.
The match was tied for just 124 seconds before TCU pulled ahead on a penalty kick by Castain in the 6th minute, following a CU handball in the penalty area. 37 seconds later, Bella Diorio landed the knockout blow, extending the lead to 3-1.
Castain would add two more goals in the first half to give TCU a 5-1 lead.
TCU's sixth goal came in the 55th minute, again off the foot of Castain, to cap off the afternoon.
Up Next
Colorado will head down to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech on Thursday.
