Travis Hunter Wins The Biletnikoff Award As Nation’s Most Outstanding Receiver

December 12, 2024 | Football

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The trophies keep coming for Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.  Less than an hour after he won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player Thursday, he won the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's top receiver regardless of position by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.

The award was announced on the 34th Annual College Football Awards Show on ESPN.  Hunter is the first player in history to earn any combination of offensive and defensive specific national player of the year honors.

For Hunter, it's his third major award of the day and fifth of the week, as he also earned the Associated Press Player of the Year honors earlier Thursday along with the Bednarik Award.  Earlier in the week he won the Lott IMPACT Trophy for the nation's top defensive player and the Paul Hornung Award for the nation's most versatile player.

He is the first CU player to win the Biletnikoff Award.

Hunter caught 92 passes for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns while picking up 53 first downs and had just three drops.  Per PFF, he caught 11-of-16 contested catches and also led all FBS players with 21 receptions of 20 yards or longer.  He had a contested completion percentage of 68.8, one of 14 players over the two-thirds mark, and his overall completion percentage of 80.0 is the third-best in the Power 4 and fifth best in the FBS, and he had double the receptions of three of the other four players.

He had 396 yards after the catch and 185 after contact.  His 14 touchdown passes is a new CU season record while his 92 catches ranks second and his 1,152 yards ranks fifth, with the Alamo Bowl still to be played.

He has played 672 snaps of offense overall, including 610-of-649, or 94%, taking out the two games he was injured.  He has also played 688 snaps of defense, including 658-of-708, or 92.9 percent, in those same games.

Hunter is the 12th Colorado player to earn any kind of recognition from the Biletinkoff Award as a member of the watch list or after it was paired down.  He's only the fourth to move past the watch-list phase, and was just the second player named a finalist along with Rae Carruth in 1996.  Michael Westbrook in 1994 and Nelson Spruce in 2014 were both named semifinalists.

Hunter is enroute to New York as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, with its ceremony set for Saturday at 6 p.m. MT on ESPN.  He is also a finalist for the Walter Camp Award, which will be given out during Thursday's show, as well.
