Buffaloes Never Got Much Going But Have Quick Turnaround
EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Colorado men's golf team never got much momentum over the two days here in the rainy Pacific Northwest and in the end, finished in a tie for 10th here Tuesday at the 34th annual Oregon Duck Invitational came to a close.
No. 21 Illinois had been tied with No. 24 Oregon entering the final round but pulled away for a seven-stroke win, as the Fighting Illini turned in Wednesday's only subpar round (a 6-under 278) and won with a 2-under 850 total; in the process, Illinois became only the third school that wasn't from the Pacific Time Zone in the 34 years of the event to win it, joining Oklahoma State (2011) and Liberty (2018 co-champs).
The top seven had been separated by just four strokes as well after two rounds, but they did separate in the final standings. No. 41 Northwestern finished third (861), Utah fourth (863), Colorado State fifth (866) and No. 30 Oklahoma State sixth (867).
The No. 58 Buffaloes had a decent start to the day, and about a third of the way through had the third-best round of the day going but eventually finished up with a 13-over 297 score for the round, the high score for the day, and in the end, CU slipped from a tie for eighth into a tie for 10th with No. 54 Oregon State with a 29-over 881.
Junior Tucker Clark fashioned a 1-over par 72 Tuesday on the 6997-yard, par-71 Eugene Country Club course track, the best score by one of CU's designated scorers, to finish tied for 38th with a 7-over 220 scorecard. He had a team-high four birdies with 37 pars opposite one bogey and two doubles. He started on No. 7 and worked to 3-under after 10 holes, but suffered his double bogeys in a four-hole stretch that took him out of the red. He did birdie his last hole to get back to 1-over.
Dylan McDermott also tied for 38th after he finished up with a 3-over 74 to post his 7-over 220 score. He led the team in birdies for the event with nine, three in each round, and also had 10 pars in each round for 30 overall; the only difference was he had a double bogey Tuesday after he had a pair of 73s Monday. He played the par-5 holes at 6-under, tying for the second-best in the 88-man field.
Junior Justin Biwer tied for 43rd after closing with a 5-over 76, which pushed him to an 8-over 221 overall. That's snapped a streak of 19 straight 54-hole tournaments where he posted a score of 220 or lower. He closed with one birdie and 12 pars against four bogeys and a double; ironically his only bird came on the 408-yard, par-4 14th hole, one of just 10 recorded on the hole in the final round. He had five birdies and tied for the team-high with 37 pars, with one of his second round birdies coming on the tough 470-yard, par-4 8th hole, where there were just five all week. The par count tied for the 15th-most in the field with Clark.
Sophomore Hunter Swanson tied for 66th with a 14-over 227 scorecard, firing a 4-over 75 Tuesday. He had three birdies and eight pars with seven bogeys, wrapping the two days with five birdies and 31 pars against 17 bogeys and a double. His birdies in the final round all came on the par-5's, which he has mastered this season as he is now 47-under on the year.
Freshman Brandon Knight had his first poor round of his collegiate career, an 11-over 82, his first in the 80s coming hin his 24th round. He didn't post a lot of big numbers (just one double bogey), but 10 bogeys dotted his scorecard with just a birdie and six pars. His lone birdie came on his opening hole, the par-5 7th. He had three birdies and 34 pars overall.
Junior Jack Holland competed here as an individual, and finished up with his best round of the three, a 1-over 72, as he tied for 66th along with Swanson with a 14-over 227 total. He opened his day with eight straight pars wrapped things Tuesday overall with a birdie and 15 pars and two bogeys, playing the tough par-3's even along with Clark.
Illinois' Jackson Buchanan shot one of the three low rounds on Tuesday – a 4-under 67 – using it to capture medalist honors with a 6-under 207 score. It was good for a three-shot win over Utah's Javier Barcos.
"Tough round, tough two days," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We got away from what makes us great, which is our competitiveness and focusing on what is ahead of us and not behind us. But we have a really good opportunity to come right back out at the Goodwin and compete right away."
The Buffaloes will now head about 430 miles south to San Francisco where they will compete in Stanford's "The Goodwin," which runs Thursday through Saturday. The event will take place at TPC at Harding Park; CU has a practice round scheduled Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. MDT.
NOTES: The final round started under cloudy skies with the temperature 46 degrees (43 wind chill with 7-8 mile per hour breeze); light rain fell briefly in the morning and it eventually warmed into the mid-50's … The average score for all 263 rounds was 73.88 (73.57 for the final round, the lowest of the three); only six players finished under par with just one matching it, otherwise 81 players were on the unhappy side of par … The Buffs finished sixth in pars (169; Oregon State led with 176), while making the 13th-most birdies (28, Loyola-Marymount led with 47) … Colorado played the par-5's the fourth-best Monday at 14-under overall, but were down the line on the par-3's (tied for 11th, 25-over) and the par-4s (12th, plus-43) … The Buffaloes posted a 4-9-1 mark here, with their season record dipping a bit to 62-58-3 record (.516) against Division I competition; a team must finish above .500 to qualify for the NCAA postseason … The Goodwin will be important for the Buffs, as there are 31 teams entered in the field so they will have a chance to greatly improve on the record versus their peers.
